Ok but what about the other question ? Is it normal for speeds to go down by more than 35mb at like 2pm ? I can live with 55mb, but if it stays at less than 20mb for most of the day I might as well downgrade to the 50mb package

Nope, not that I've ever seen. Our house and the aul wans are both 32, along with a very good mate and we all get full speed all the time(well any time I've tested). Other friends are 150Mb and they've never mentioned losing any speed when I drool at their speeds.

Try it on wired but there shouldnt be congestion problems, what you may be seeing is just increased interference wirelessly during the day, or somebody was between you and the router, opened a fridge door or something along those lines.

Thanks I'll post back after I try it wired

Really wish UPC would come near me! Have imagine on tester at the moment and think I'll move. Its roughly half price and seems better for the last few hours Ive been testing it.

I read back a few pages to see what everyone else is getting on UPC and I noticed you're still on Eircom but are looking to make the switch. I might as well leave this up in case you'd like to compare your levels anyhow, regardless of your new UPC connection's performance, and in case anyone else wants to compare:
    upcmodemnoiseandpowerst.th.png

My upload power level is a little bit high, but it has some headroom before things start to f*ck up (max ~55dBmV), so it's still well within tolerance. The rest of the stats are very much in line.
That's interesting. My receive power levels are much, much higher than that. They fluctuate a bit but they're usually all +10dBmv or above.

Got bumped up free from 100Mb to 150Mb after being a runner up on a comp on FB.

    Happy enough!

Just got 150 Mbps from UPC.

My first question is why is there such a discrepancy between speedtest.net and UPC Speedtest?
I get a very fast, (nearly) accurate result from UPC at anything from 75 to 158Mpbs speeds, while the same tests on speedtest.net at the same time return values in the range of 25 to 75 Mbps... Of course it is wired via ethernet, not wifi.

Second question is what's the contention ratio? Or why on earth would my 150Mbps connection slow down to a "buffering signal" message while streaming video? This drives me mad.

That could well be the host end not you for the video stream.

Try a different speed test server with speedtest.net. Contention isnt really a problem as they have excess capacity.

I'm in Cork, server from Cork on Speedtest gives me 43Mbps Down / 3.05Mbps Up just now. UPC gives me 55Mbps Down / 5 Mbps up...
I always get my connection speeds cut by half to 4 times (what I should be getting) in the evening...
    Hence the question on contention.

And same question again, why the best speed test site around (speedtest.net) barely goes above 50 on a 150 Mbps line?

Will have to talk to UPC methink

Just switched from Eircom to UPC 100mb and got the Cisco EPC3925 router

Speed last night at around 10pm

    Speed right now

Is it normal to go down to less than 20mb at this time of day ? Should I contact UPC about it ?

Also 55mb is nowhere near 100mb. Or is that pretty much all I can expect on a wireless connection ? The router is too far from my PC so wired is not really an option

Bought a pair of 200mb powerline adapters that were on sale during black friday on amazon and it has siginifcantly improved my speed

    2339753510.png

Happy enough with that but I think I'll downgrade to the 50mb package and save myself a tenner every month as I won't be getting anywhere near 100mb anyway unless I go wired.

This is what you call a slow internet. It's 4 in the morning FFS and that's the best it'll pull?

Nothing downloading or streaming. We've taken to making those dial up noises when Facebook is loading to keep ourselves entertained.

You can ditch 3 prior to January 7th if you are on either their 15 or 60GB monthly plans. They are increasing the prices for the plans and because they are changing the prices you have the right to terminate the contract without penalty.

    Eircom line in Waterford.

Kidding. Did a speedtest in WIT back in september, this is what they get being a good bit outside of the city on their dedicated HEAnet line.

My own copper crap line in Tramore.

    2396867332.png

(I ran my own DSL line test using an engineer friends line checker and found my max speed given distance from exchange is 14.4Mbps. So, can't fault eircom for giving me all they can, even if the profile on my modem says 17803)

I get 1.7Mb on everything, 2.2Mb on steam.

cant say Im best pleased. Its 2am, dublin on a 100mb UPC which although not 100mb/s was acceptable quick. This was a few months ago and has been going consistantly downhill.

When it was good it was great though, UPC will be getting a call tomorrow
