    Hey,
I was checking my lotto numbers this morning on lotto.ie and happened to see the link for view causes that the National Lottery have given money to. A lot of the places they have provided money to are great causes and others I think is a disgrace.

For example, ‘restoration of thatched cottages around Donegal’ and money to Football clubs and a new boot for Lough Muckno Water-ski and Wakeboard Club! These are only some of them!

I think that money should be going to better places like charities or towards hospitals and places in need like Animal shelters.

When you win you can donate to those places yourself. Keep playing! Mybe even start playing more often so you've a better chance.

I don't know much about football but do they not make their money through ticket entries etc?

You are correct then, you don't know much about it.

But you still manage to have a definite opinion on something you do not know much about.

All im saying is there is a lot of places in more of need than a football club and cottages in Donegal.

Hospitals understaffed, homeless people on streets etc. I dont think anyone would have a sleepless night if the football club didnt get money from the National lottery! Im not looking for a row I just don't see why its not going to better places. I know my local football club is sponsered by the community.

You'll find that nearly every organised sporting club has benefited from Lottery funding at this stage, including those you perceive to be solely funded by the local community. The brief used by the Lottery is 'Good Causes' which are not necessarily charities.

By funding sport, the arts AND charities, they contribute to improved welfare of all the citizens of the Country.

I'd rather see money go to provide an inner city basketball court than an animal shelter BTW. People before pets

You only played because you thought your money was going to good causes?

    Hospitals understaffed,

If the HSE can't manage their budget it's their own fault

    Charlie McCreevy 2002 6.5 billion
    Brian Cowan 2008 15.5 billion
    Michael Noonan 2012 13.6 billion

Billions pumped in by different ministers

Over twice what they had 10 years ago
There's a black hole somewhere

Keep the lotto seperate OP :)

Im not looking for a row I just don't see why its not going to better places. I know my local football club is sponsered by the community.

Investing in community and the health of the nation (by investing in local clubs be they sporting or recreational) will in the long term help improve the health and well being of the nation. I assume the restoration of the cottages in donegal was for heritage reasons (again will benefit tourism possibly but also has the less tangible benefit of maintaining our heritage).

We cant pigeonhole all state funds for short term solutions that dont fix any systemic problems. The homeless need to be helped our hospitals need to be improved but is that more important than improving the health of the nation long term through sports clubs etc? Maybe it is, but I dont think we should completely ignore those either.

Investment in communities which is what the lottery funds mainly do is incredibly important in my opinion. The lottery was set up specifically to invest in these kind of things. Why should we change that now?

And you did not buy a ticket because the hospitals are understaffed did you in any case?

I agree to an extent where the lottery is concerned and I know a lot of people share this opinion in general.

It's why I generally only give to animal charities. :)

I really detest people who spew this crap. Can't do F-all in this country without someone getting their knickers in a twist for the money to be thrown into the health systems black hole instead. Complete nonsense, there's money going to hospitals beds too OP! Relax.

‘restoration of thatched cottages around Donegal’

If you have a old thatched cottege the heritage people of ireland or whatever they're called make you re thatch it if it's not in great quality :/ and thatching is extremely expensive, they give you a bit of a grant but you have to pay some yourself, so yes, i'm glad they give money to these things :P

Our beloved leaders are selling the license to run the lotto, for a 20 year period, to raise spending money.
I'm not too sure whether the new operators will be quite as generous with their funding of local activities.

    1)Tourists love thatched cottages
    2)Make thatched cottages look nice
3)Toutists come to look at thatched cottages
    4)Tourists spend wads of cash
    5)Profit

The lottery operators dont have any say in where the money goes or who gets it.

Some people might have a problem with them giving to charites like Concern etc where the CEO makes €150k+. A local hurling or football club could make a lot better use of the money maybe?

Bit of a selective look at where the money is going OP

I looked myself and it includes

    Down syndrome Ireland
    Muscular dystrophy Ireland
    MS ireland
    Alzheimer society
    Tuam cancer care
    Order of malta
    Limerick youth service

Theres a good video here about tge Donegal Cottages

    http://www.lottery.ie/en/Good-Causes-and-Winners/Good-Causes/donegal-cottages/

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

The Bull O'Donoghue was a great man for getting lotto money for Kerry ;)

But then Michael D did the same for Galway and McDaid for Donegal

Leo will ensure good times for Dublin 15!
