Church bashing in AH

Is it just me? Or is anybody else starting to get tired of seeing thread after thread hijacked by people who can't wait to stick the boot into the church (specifically RC, although there may be others)...it's now getting to a point where I sit reading threads, waiting for somebody to grab any excuse at all to have a go at the church. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not a church advocate or defender at all, and I'm, as much as anybody else, sickened by the behaviour of the church, not only in Ireland but worldwide. (They're starting to throw their weight around in the Philippines now because of a new government ruling that family planning - as in contraception - should be state funded and properly provided and the hypocrisy is frankly disgusting).

But it's getting to a point where I seem to be constantly reading threads and then suddenly, out of nowhere, a complete non seqitur pops up just for somebody to have a go at the church and for no other reason. Why bother? What's the point? If you want to have a go at the church, start a thread about it, find another forum...

But stop hijacking my enjoyment of AH with your church bashing. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm not saying stop doing it, I'm not saying ignore your convictions...

I'm just saying, find a proper place to talk about it if it pisses you off THAT much, and stop throwing it in my face over and over again!

    I agree op, church sucks!

The church should be crushed for what they did to this country.

The church should be stripped of most or all of it's assets.

I hate the roman catholic church as an organisation and hope they are never respected in this country again.

Bankers, the government, the recession, the rcc, the public sector etc. are things people are genuinely angry about in the country for different reasons and they come up in thread after thread in AH. That's how after hours works.

Fair enough. But it means that instead of constantly checking into AH for the craic that used to be going on, I now only occasionally check in because the escapism that AH used to represent is disappearing. So maybe it's just me. And if people are genuinely angry about stuff, fair enough, but as I said before, surely there's more constructive ways to deal with it than AH.

Well what did you really expect to achieve with this thread only adding to the numerous as you put it church bashing threads? You know well by now what AH is like, and you just set up yet another opportunity for church bashing, instead of putting the thread in Feedback, where it could have had serious discussion.

I can't tell whether it was a genuine appeal to conscience or just another reverse psychology troll thread tbh, hence my earlier post, as in "Jesus not this crap again!"

I didn't expect (or attempt) to achieve anything. I just thought I'd say what was on my mind. It's not a troll thread, and I know exactly what to expect from AH. But unfortunately that's not what could have been expected a few years ago. Instead of fun and craic and what AH used to be about, I now start threads wary of the first attack.

    Feeling somewhat vindicated.

If I may offer a possible solution by way of analogy OP?

I've no interest in airsoft. There are often lots of threads under the 'new threads' tab with the word 'airsoft' in the title. I don't open them.

As an aside, I'm happy enough to see the church bashed. Repeatedly. And viciously.

In which case, and in relation to my original point, why don't you find a better and potentially more effective way to go about this? As it happens, I agree with your sentiment...but bashing the church repeatedly and viciously in AH is like pissing harder and harder, over and over again, against the same wall.

(Oh and in relation to your analogy, it's not exactly effective; imagine, if you will, coming into AH night afer night and clicking on every thread you like the look of, and without exception, every single thread sooner or later - usually sooner - starts talking about airsoft. That's closer to where it is.)

I belive in god. I do not believe in the church however. I view it as a 'business'.

But what I don't like is someone using any excuse to show how atheist they are and slag people of faith. Like there is slagging the chruch, as they have ALOT to answer for , then there is using that as a means to poke fun of peoples beliefs.

AH users thread carefully on Jewish threads.

Anti-Catholicism is the last acceptable prejudice, however.

People aren't fond of the group that enabled the sexual abuse of children, shocking.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    Double-standards hypocrite.

It's an disgraceful stain on our history yes, and it sickens me how they've essentially gotten away with it.

Doesn't excuse the churches role in it.

Sadly people aren't going to listen to you :(
Boards.ie is populated with users who have such a hard on for the church & people of faith.

I'm not looking for excuses. I'm looking for civility on AH. The bigoted anti-Catholic vitriol is out of control.

When it comes to Jewish threads, everyone's all hip and cool and tolerant.

Disagree with the doctrines of the church and highlight wrong-doings all ye like, but please don't try to infest the site with bigoted, anti-Catholic vitriol.

    What a stupid post.
The church needs to be attacked at every opportunity in order for this country to move forward to a better place.

If the men in frock' opinion is so important let them run for the Dail.
Otherwise shut the fkkk up and stick to saying mass for the 3 old ladies and a dog who care.

Why don't you address the point I was making? Are you an Irish passport holder yourself?

Anyway, you sound like a poorly educated moron who would do the country proud.

Catholicism plays a far far greater role in Irish life than any other religion, especially Judaism. That's why it bears the weight of criticism here.

For what it's worth the Jewish religion is every bit as backward and batsh1t crazy as Christianity. However in Ireland I don't have rabbis preaching at me on how to live my life.

I don't spend as much time on AH as I used to but I do frequent the Atheist & Agnostic one as it's my favourite forum on the site for discussion and often there's plenty of bashing of some Hasidic Jewish groups who try and prevent their members from reporting rapes etc. within their community. The anti-catholic "vitriol" is not out of control considering what the church did and what it continues to show no real remorse for even to the point of moving money into trusts to protect it from going to victims of abuses. The RCC deserves as much respect as the WBC or the KKK. None.

Sorry OP but this is also part of the problem is people defending a vile organisation will get people angry. Anyway there are more than enough threads in AH to enjoy that the few that get bogged down in religious debate shouldn't leave you stuck and if it is, maybe you need less time in AH, there are some great forums on this site with dedicated communities.

Why can't you just voice your opinion without resorting to hatred and bigotry?

I am an Irish passport holder.
However, if I decided to ever give up my passport I wouldn't qualify for another country's. I was born here and pay tax here so I'm well entitled to carry a passport.

As for my education - you'd need a PhD to trump me.

The RCC has no relevance today.
    They are anti woman
    Anti gay
    Anti health (contraception)
    Anti divorce
    Anti abortion
They raped our children and covered up their deeds.
Not to mention the fact that their whole basis for existence is a pack of lies.

So I make no excuses for coming onto the odd thread and putting the boot in to them. They well desrve it.

    So what institute educated you?

Does it take a PhD to get into negative equity with multiple failed investment properties?

I suppose you expect me to bail you out too?

What bigotry? My position on the RCC is based on their actions. I had no biases before hand. As for hatred, that is the perfect emotion one employs when discussing an organisation whose members raped children, covered it up and continue to look to place the blame elsewhere. Should I not hate such an organisation?
