car not heating up, thermostat

    hi people

    k, started doing this yesterday a little bit, and today barley heating up at all on the way in to work and home tonight from city centre to portmarnock.

    on the way in only started to heat up when sitting in traffic but when i moved off again in drop just below the 80 mark, when it normally is over it but never overheated.

    if it is the thermostat is it buried in the engine bay in a mk4 astra petrol, and does the coolant have to be changed too, as i only done it two months ago

    Hi,

    I would guess that either the thermostat is stuck in the open position or you have a dodgy temp guage.

    As far as changing the thermostat is concerned I'm not familiar with the engine bay of an astra I'm afraid, but as it is part of the coolant system you will lose at least some of the coolant from the system when swapping it out. How much depends on its location and you will need to bleed the system afterwards...

    It would be worse if it was stuck in the closed position as that would cause overheating etc... with it stuck open the engine doesn't get up to the correct operating temp and as a result wont be as fuel efficient...
