I have used a steel ruler and a Stanley knife, on another occasion a very large scissors. On both projects the cut ends were finished with trim and so tidy anyway.

A hacksaw would do the job, tidier cut than a handsaw.

Essentially both answers are right. Cut generally with fine tooth saw and trim with knife.
