According to an article on ESPN today, the Dolphins still have a 0.8% chance of making the playoffs.....but that's better than 0% .....*cough* Jets *cough*

In the wacky confusing world of the NFL standings, the Jets and Dolphins have the same record, because of tiebreakers the Jets are ahead of the Dolphins in the AFC East......but the Jets are eliminated from the playoffs and the Dolphins still have a mathematical chance of making it.

The Dolphins play the Bills and the Pats. The Jets play the Chargers and the Bills. Nothing wacky about it.

If they both win out, the two of them will be 1-1 in the series and 3-3 in the division. I'm not going to look at common games but I'm assuming that where the phins will be ahead in the division.

Amazingly no.....if they both win out....the Jets will still be 2nd.

Here comes the confusing bit......to start with, it would require an unlikely combination of results: Steelers defeating the bengals this week, and the Ravens winning agains the Bengals and the Browns beating the Steelers in week 17.

That would leave the Jets, Dolphins, Steelers and Bengals with an 8-8 record. Dolphins hold the tiebreaker over the Steelers and Bengals but not the Jets, but a 3rd place team can't be a wildcard, so even though they have the tiebreaker, because the Jets are ahead of them, the Dolphins wouldn't get in. The Jets don't have a tiebreaker over either team so they wouldn't get in either.

Now, if the Dolphins were to win out and the Jets lose either of their last 2 games, the Dolphins would be second in the AFC east and would get the wildcard through tiebreakers if the AFC North teams have the results i mentioned before.

    The NFC east says hello.

Or maybe I'm reading you wrong. but 3 teams from the same division can and have been in playoffs.

Yes....3 teams from the same division can make the playoffs.....but the 3rd place team can't make the playoffs if the 2nd place team doesn't, even though in this case, the 3rd place team in the standings would have a better record than the second playoff team......it's weird and this is the first time i've ever seen it possible.

Last year the AFC north provided both wildcards

Yeah, a few years ago, the Colts, Jags and Titans all made the playoffs.

    Edit: 2007-8

As did the Cowboys, Giants and Skins.

AFC South and NFC East made up 50% of teams in the playoffs that year. That's amazing tbh.

Same happened in 2006-07 when the Eagles, Giants and Cowboys made the playoffs

The power rankings after this week have the Broncos at no.2. You just gotta laugh at the hyperbole that surrounds whatever team P.Manning happens to be the QB for. The Texans and Patriots both beat them but they beat a banged up Ravens who had lost their previous two and its being made out as some sort of definitive statement that the Broncos are the best team in the AFC and maybe the NFL.

So, we use the fact that they lost two early games to the two teams who hit streaks early and are now fading away, but then can't use that for the Ravens who beat the Patriots early on in the year which shows they're good?

They didn't just beat the Ravens. They absolutely demolished the best home team in the NFL in their own backyard. That was a statement.

Who would you put there after this week? There is very little to choose between the top 4, but the fact the Broncos are on a long winning streak would suggest they are the best team at the moment. If anything putting San Fran at #1 is a kneejerk reaction.

But it's not really hyperbole.......we're into the business end of the season and they've won 9 in a row.

Yes the Ravens were depleted, but they're still a playoff bound team and the Broncos win came in Baltimore.

As for the Patriots....even though they came back and made it close, the "experts" that produce the power rankings were always going to punish them for giving up 41 points at home.

The Ravens had lost their previous two games which is very important.

The Texans made a statement with their performance the weekend coming off a crushing loss the previous week. The Falcons made a statement with their performance the weekend. For me though the biggest statement made the weekend was by Green Bay in Chicago. For me they should be no.1 now.

As I said the Ravens had lost their previous two. Everybody knew they were in bad shape. Check out the NFL betting thread and you'll see that everybody had the Broncos as the bet of the weekend.

5-2 at home. Can't have been that long. Same home record as Patriots, Giants. Worse home record than Texans,Colts,Broncos, Packers,Vikings,Falcons,49ers.

The team was just on a 16 game home winning streak fyi.

And have since lost twice at home. All the teams named above now have a better home record. Not really the big achievement you were making out since they also lost at home to the Steelers in their previous home game.

So not really the best home team in the NFL. Top 10 maybe.

When the Broncos came to town they were on a 16-1 home stretch. Top 10 maybe? You're the one having a laugh here.

When the Broncos came to town the Ravens were playing horribly, had lost their previous 2 games, and the Ravens weren't even favorites with the bookies so in other words were expected to lose.

Do you rate the Steelers win as a big statement win also? Maybe they should also be considered Superbowl favorites?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

The Steelers scraped through. If the Broncos wanted to they could have put 50 on the Ravens. Big difference.

I think the rankings should have us number one right now. Never mind Manning, we've a top 5 defence too. We've won nine straight and our only losses were early season when the team had far from gelled. People have to take that into account, we were starting from scratch week one basically. I really wish we could play Atlanta and Houston now and got some of the easier games early on.

Tell me, who could you definitively say is better right now? Or at the very least, in better form? We just marched into a ground where we had never won and where the Ravens were near invincible the past two years and obliterated them. In fact, 34-17 was incredibly flattering on the balance of it. 52-7 would have been a fairer reflection but we eased off late and made mistakes early. 2 solid quarters of work and we hammered the ****e out of them at home regardless.

It's been rumoured that as a child Cecil used to be an avid pigeon racer. Every day, up until his late teens, Cecil used to feed, groom and observe his wonderful array of some of the worlds finest racing pigeons.
every Sunday was 'Race Day' for Cecil and his pigeons and nothing, not even his strict Baptist beliefs (Mass on Sunday), got in the way of it.
One unfortunate Sunday, racing was called off due to unforseen Bush fires and Cecil was forced to keep his energetic Pigeons in the cage.
The Pigeons knew when it was Raceday and this Sunday was no exception, however, being kept penned up in that cage infuriated them.
Cecil could'nt take the boredom of not letting them fly, and so, foolishly, let them out for a quick fly before supper. Disaster struck
The pigeons, so aggrivated, turned on their caring owner Cecil in an act that could only be described as Barbaric. In their hundreds, the pigeons began pecking Cecil with devastating accuracy and precision. This onslaught lasted a mere 3 minutes until his father, Cecil senior, shot his pistol to scare them, off.
Unfortunately for Cecil it was too late.
he was left severely traumatised and with a heavily damaged left eyeball.
Today, he is a great example to younger, aspiring footballers on how to rise from adversity and turn disability into success.
I salute you Cecil and you're outstanding road to greatness.

How on earth do you make this out? How many changes did you make on offense? You brought in an elite QB, thats not starting from scratch its improving your offense. They had the whole offseason and preseason to get ready just like everybody else.

I think people are focusing on one game too much. It's not a reaction to one game. It's 9 straight wins for the Broncos, 6 of those on the road, every one a convincing win. The eye-test and the records show that they're playing better now than they were earlier in the season, Manning wasn't as physically sharp in the first few games and there were cases where receivers weren't on the same page, which is understandable with a new QB in the team, but they look to have ironed a lot of these issues since then.

The Texans are worse now than they were earlier in the season. They've had key injuries in the defense, with Cushing out for the season and Brooks Reed also out at LB now. They've been on the slide for weeks and a home win over the Colts doesn't prove much. So a result from week 3, when the Texans beat the Broncos, carries less weight than what's happened in the 11 weeks since. e.g. The Cardinals beat the Patriots in week 2, how much weight should we give that result at this point?

As for the Patriots, well the Broncos have a better record, so hardly hyperbole to suggest they might be better.

On power-rankings in general, I take them with a grain of salt, but 49ers #1 and Broncos #2, I happen to agree with.

    Texans and Patriots.

We changed two TEs, the QB and the entire offensive philosophy.... Its a big jump from the playbook consisting of various run plays and an "all go" play to Mannings notoriously complex offence in one offseason. I'd argue that's a huge change.

We've a better record than one and the other is reeling. They beat us sure, in weeks 3 and 5. Lot changed since then.

Apart from a banged up Ravens how many teams with winning records have you beaten in that 9 game run?

You beat a Cincy team who'd lost three on the bounce including two home games and I can't think of another team with a winning record that you beat in that run.

That run included a five game run of the Bucs, Chiefs, Chargers, Panthers and Raiders. Not exactly something to get excited about.

The Patriots beat the Broncos, Texans, Seahawks and Colts during a 10 game winning streak up to Sunday nights loss to the 49ers.

After a horrendous first half this Patriots team almost hauled back the 49ers. I think our schedule has been a lot more difficult and there would be no talk of the Broncos being ahead of us if we had pulled off the comeback last Sunday.

It all comes down to the media going crazy over one decent performance against an injury ravaged Ravens. Almost everybody expected the Broncos to win that game against a team that had lost their previous two.

Just got around to watching the Pats game and fúck that was the worst first half performance I have ever seen from them. Turnover central and not one receiver seemed able to hold onto a pass. And then we have the second half comeback, awesome stuff with them coming so close to an NFL comeback record. A loss yes, but a powerful message was also sent out.
