Umm, we were through? Why pass up the opportunity to play our young players for a team competing in the same competition that we are. Stupid attitude to have yourself...
And as I pointed out, Spartak were stuck in 4th place yet still tried to win.

Who said Barca weren't trying to win?

We're trying to save our players for 2 consecutive hard league games... we did the right thing for us...

Barca lost a few Scottish friends last night, could have been a lot more had they lost. Really poor attitude to put that joke of a team out. Spartak had even less to play for and still played their strongest team.

To be fair to them, they brought Messi on and were very lucky not to lose him to serious injury.

They have Betis away this weekend which is a very difficult fixture (as Madrid found out two weeks ago).

Spartak had 1 million euro and pride to play for, don't play until Monday night and then have a winter break.

I'd actually fancy that "joke" of a team against your team. And I don't mean that with disrespect. Benfica are a good side and for a club's B side to match them is something. They started off shakily enough, Benifca missed an awful chance which should have been offside but wasn't given. Pinto made a few good saves but Barca had some chances too - they even had to play the last few minutes with 10 men.
Last year, an arguably even weaker B side beat Bate 4-0. They're by no means a joke of a team.

The group was won regardless. Thats the vagaries of a group situation.

Co-efficient and money. Thats what they had to play for.

I don't think you think that. I don't think anybody could think that.

    110 Games without a goal...then THAT!!

Thing's couldn't have gone better tonight.
Expected a real tough game, and it was for the first 35, great goal by Falcao.
Barca showed a lot of character coming back though...amazing goal to level it up by Adriano. 2nd half was a lot easier .

Add to that, the other Catalans of Espanyol took 2 points from Madrid :D

Very early to call it, but a 13point gap is a Huge task for Madrid to pull back.

Crowd were excellent tonight too, it's a shame they are only out in force and voice on the big occasions though.

A great day for Barcelona as club legends Xavi and Puyol agree new contracts to 2016 and Messi agrees a new deal until 2018.

Was wondering if Xavi would ever be tempted to go to the Premier League given that he's done it all. I guess it won't happen now.

He's always said he's dream was to finish out at his Career at Barca.

great to have them all for so long, Puyol will be 39 at the end of the 2016 season though? Used sparingly hopefully!

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has had a relapse, a tumor was removed last year.

Barcelona are preparing a statement to give more information about Vilanova's relapse and about who will replace him during recovery.

Sad news best wishes to him

Yeah but he gonna keep QPR up. He prefer to handle players like Taarabt & Derry instead of Messi & Puyol

Terrible news! Hopefully he makes a full and speedy recovery

Just can't catch a break! Still waiting on an official club statement but this is bad news. After all the great work done up to Christmas!

I don't want to speculate too much, but any chance Pep would be persuaded to come back and steady the ship? I hope not as I'd prefer Tito to be able to keep going but that's highly unlikely.

Shocking news and gutted for Vilanova. He has been working a charm since he took over. Hopefully he pulls through without too much suffering.

Not sure who will take over. The current number 2, Jordi Roura, is not nearly near experienced enough for it.

I guess, as mentioned above, Pep is the obvious choice, and given his love for the club, I am sure he would gladly step in for this emergency. Also, Luis Enrique is currently idle, so maybe he will step into the breach?

Hope he makes a speedy recovery. Would like to see Pep step back in if Tito has to take considerable time out.

I do not think there is any "if" involved here. If true, he will not be back anytime soon.

On a professional level, this must be devastating for him.

But that's completely secondary at the moment, obviously enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,808 ✭✭✭Caveman1

If its true & Vilanova has to step aside, how long would he be looking at in regards to being out of the game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭miralize

Thats just disastrous news from a personal view... hope he gets better soon, but obviously has as much time as he needs. His style of how the team should play is, dare I say, a bit more ruthless than last year and from that point of view its hard to see him go after 6 months. Not sure who could do what he or Pep does.

As much as I'd like to see Guardiola return, he doesn't owe the club or the fans anything. He did more than enough for the club during his time as a player and in charge and shouldn't feel like he has to return, even for a temporary while. But he might due to the fact that Tito is a good friend, so I'm not sure..

Wow, massive loss. Barca were playing much better this season than last and that with no defenders. Only logical choice would be Pep but he is on a sabbatical so might not want to come back so soon. Has to be someone in-house though who knows the Barca style. Would Cruyff step in for few months or Luis Enrique?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,912 ✭✭✭SeantheMan

Get well soon Tito. I never though anyone could do such a good job as Pep did, but he was in the middle of a record breaking run.

Hope he has a speedy recovery.
