Will NCT test a car with the yellow engine warning light on?

Not if it's petrol it won't, however if the light is on due to a fault that would result in an NCT failure (e.g. high emissions) then the cause of the light being on will need to be looked at.

The engine light on in a diesel will result in an NCT failure.

In a petrol car, the only warning lights that will cause you to automatically fail the test are ABS and airbag.

However, if it is an oil pressure or oil level light, you would be well advised to get it sorted asap, regardless of NCT.

They won't test or it won't fail for the light?

Any chance of a coherent response?

I think he means an engine management light being on with a petrol car is not an automatic failure, and will get tested, however they will look at the reasons for the light being present.

NCT will test a petrol car with the light on. They don't care why it's on if it passes everything else.

Had a petrol car pass recently with main engine light (yellow) on i knew in advance that it was an 02 sensor issue.

This causes the engine to rev crazy at start up and settles down after a few minutes and some juice.

Pretty funny watching the look on the testers face during the emissions test.

In fairness when he spoke to me after he said first test was off the charts and second all good.

    Good luck with test.

I had a car pass the NCT this month with engine management light on, it's a petrol car.

    Hope this helps.

Just because the engine light being on means that it can still pass the NCT does NOT mean that the problem should be ignored. This is one of the reasons why a car passing the NCT does not for a second mean that it's 100% perfect. The light is on because there is a fault with the engine or else some component that controls the engine's behaviour and/or emissions.

In the case of my car, I got a diagnostic check and no errors showed up, the car is running fine, and I didn't want to waste money finding out why the E/M light was staying on, I should add that the car is worth about 1500 euros so it's not worth wasting money for the sake of curiosity.
