R4 for 3ds xl

looking for one of these for my sons 3ds xl but im hearing conflicting statements some people are saying that the 3ds xl blocks all the cards but some places are saying that the cards work with all 3ds version 4.4.0-10 or the likes ... any help here much appreciated
