Could i please ask for advice on which laptop is best to buy ,for basic surfing,and for my better half to play farmville etc on FB.

I have not used one, but look into buying a Chromebook (Link) Or maybe a netbook?

Both should fit into your price range. The battery-life on the netbooks is pretty good. I don't know if the same is true about the Chromebook
