Great piece of music with incredibly depressing lyrics

One of the greatest songs ever written.

    Plain and simple.

The fact that it is without question overplayed takes nothing was from it's brilliance.

When i hear this song, I know its Christmas. It also doesn't get on my tits like some of the other Christmas songs out there.

the middle bit with the NYPD, bells, yadda yadda chorus is ok, the beginning annoys the fcuk out of me because I cant stand McGowan's voice. nor every drunken twat who tries to sing it like him.

For some reason that song is always voted the "Best Christmas Song Ever".

It's not the worst song ever, but certainly not the best... and after 25 years, I find it grating.

I like it, I love it, its the start of Christmas when I hear it on the radio.

I think it's a fantastic song. It captures so many emotions, love, optimism, joy, self-pity, anger, regret.

'I could have been someone. Well so could anyone' is a brilliant line. It's a shame it's looked down upon (or overplayed) just because it's a 'christmas' song. It's a fantastic song in it's own right, and the fragility of MacGowan's voice constrasting with MacColl's strong, powerful voice add another great layer to it. He's a hugely underrated songwriter, whose songs are so gutwrenchingly bittersweet, and I don't think it could (or should) be sang by any other pair.

    Um.. I like it.

I hate Fairytale with a passion. Shame A Rainy Night in Soho, doesn't mention anything seasonal-could listen to that forever.

The co-writer, Jem Finer, has also written a piece of music designed to last a 1000 years. "Longplayer" is based on an existing piece of music, 20 minutes and 20 seconds in length, which is processed by computer using a simple algorithm. This gives a large number of variations, which, when played consecutively, gives a total runtime of 1000 years.

Dont understand all the hate for this song. In terms of Christmas songs its a breath of fresh air compared to the corny crap that gets churned out by other singers.

the most over-rated xmas song of all time.......in all honesty can anyone make out what shane mcgowan is singing??

This is a fantastic song. I am a big fan of Shane's songwriting. But I agree it's overplayed for over 2 decades now and that can take from it. I'm shocked its 25 yrs old & Kirsty's dead 12 yrs already.

+1, beats the cloying stuff hands down but, overplayed each and every year.

Strangely, it's rather unknown outside the ex pat and disapora community.

Forget Fairytale... When Ronan Collins plays your song on Christmas Eve, Gobnait, I know the festive season is finally upon us.

It's not so much the song, rather the annoying drunk gimps murdering it whenever it comes on the jukebox.

Which would be, ooooooh, 5 or 6 times every hour?

You're an old slut on junk, lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed.

You are an elderly lady of questionable sexual morals with a heroin habit, lying in a bed in a critical condition being fed via a drip.

    Happy Christmas:cool:

The way he's constantly flat throughout the chorus just absolutely wrecks my head. Why would you listen to that and think, "Yeah, that's a good version, release that". You'd listen and think, "Oh dear jaysus that sounds awful, burn every copy of it you can find.
