What I like about the editor is this. I keep a list of 70 or so channels that I like/use. If channels change frequency or new channels come along I simple do a full scan. All by favorite channels stay at the top of the list and I simple move the hand-full of new channels down in to that list and use multiple selection to delete all the unneeded ones. It's very quick.

What I don't like about the editor is that you can't do it after a firmware upgrade. It still only takes 20 minutes or so.

That is great. Will it work. Also, if I export from one model of the Ariva to a UDF file can I export it over the dumpfile of a different model of the Ariva one. It's not a big problem. If it just means keeping a UDF file for each model that is OK

I've tried it as an experiment and exported from 150 to 250 on the same firmware version but I'd say its a lot safer to keep the UDF files separate. There a new bin file output on version 1.20 as STB found out but i've not played with that yet.

    Hi everyone,

Trying to set up a Ferguson, when I do a terrestrial scan it picks up the Irish channels no problem but no BBC etc

What do I need to do to tune in BBC/UTV, I've looked through the satellite list but there are so many I don't know which to pick.

Any help would be much appreciated!

You'll only get UK terrestrial services if you are within range of a transmitter in Northern Ireland or Wales & have the necessary receiving aerial.

Kind of defeats the purpose of having a combo box if you don't want to use the satellite tuner.

Hi folks - a wee question here; what do I need to do to view youtube thru this box?
Am I correct in using a CAT5 to connect an eircom modem direct to the rear of the box? If that much is correct - what do I do next?
I'm bordering on totally clueless here so 'plain english' would really help, thanks!
    ;-)

Yes that would be what you are looking to add to the null modem cable for but......

I have yet to see these working (the USB to Null modem cables). I would suggest you just get a Null modem cable and find someone with a PC. Here is the lead that will work for you.

Do you not know anyone who has a PC ?

All you need then is the ABS file on a USB stick, the software uploader and the box and the lead connected between the PC and the box.

It will take less than 2 minutes to do (I have done it on countless boxes including the Arivas).

    after synchronizing

    initialise stb sdram is failed

    click back to try again

    not working

You are using a USB to serial cable ?

They do not work. The cable I suggested to you is a Null modem cable. Those SDRAM errors are because the cable you have is not configured right. Only a Null modem cable will work.

    Hi all,

Just received Ariva 250 today - thanks Tony, quick delivery and highly recommend to anyone looking for good Irish supplier with good customer service.

The box was pre-programmed with the free to air channels but not the saorview channels. I have the "aerial" plugged in but when i do the automatic scan for ireland, it shows up no channels? When I plug same aerial into saorview approved tv I do get the channels, albeit very slightly fuzzy.

When I say aerial I mean a coax wall connector that was actually the old ntl coming into the house and i suppose this is just acting like a basic aerial.
Do i need a special aerial for the Saorview side of things?
Or it is that I should just update the channel list as quoted below by Tony?

    Thanks a lot.

Also, apologies if this has already been covered but I had a decent scan through the thread and couldn't see it. RTFM also failed me :)

Ok heres your channel list http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?3djceaonu7wde1n

Do this at your own risk :

1.Download .abs file onto USB stick

2.Plug USB portable memory into USB port of receiver.
    (3) Go to Menu->Tools->Upgrade By USB
    (4) Select upgrade mode : usedb
    (5) Select desired software file
    (6) Press start to upgrade receiver

    (7) Please wait... After upgrade done successfully receiver will reboot automatically .

The NTL connection isn't from an aerial, it's a closed cable system. The channels you're getting from it are analogue cable channels, not Saorview.

You need a UHF aerial for Saorview, the exact type will mainly depend on the signal strength at your location.

Cheers for the quick reply Ronnie,

Just walloped myself in the ceann for not thinking of that!

Presume a standard rabbit ears would do then? I'm in well populated area in limerick suburb.

    Cheers

Absolutely not. The so called rabbits ears are VHF aerials only good for FM radio now. You need a UHF aerial preferably on the roof, but an indoor one may work if you are one of the 10% that can use an indoor aerial.

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately its not possible to pre-programme the saorview channels as each transmitter around the country uses a different frequency.

    Hi there,

I have a ferguson Ariva 250 a few weeks now and am very happy with it. I created my own channel favourite list with about 30 channels including saorview.

Can someone please post a 'text version' list of the channels they are using grouped by genre (news, entertainment, kids, sport, music etc.) please? I have a feeling there are a lot more satellite channels out there worth watching than the ones I have set up and would like to see what I am missing. I am reluctant to load someone else's channel list from file in case I screw up the firmware.

    Thanks in advance.

    Patrick

    Cheers for the replies everyone,

Picked up a cheap indoor aerial on the way home today in Harvey Norman - see it here http://www.did.ie/4life-amplified-indoor-aerial-dvb-t50

I actually went in with the intention of buying a bigger one for the attic or outside but the guy assured me the signal in the area is very strong, that lots of people locally have used this indoor one successfully and he even showed me a tv using it, so I thought, why not? A mate of mine, who literally lived 3 doors up also got saorview using an indoor rabbit ears type aerial last year had perfect signal, so I thought I must be part of that 10% referred to above!

Anyway, I plugged it in this evening and nothing.

Just to clarify, I'm plugging the aerial into the 'Antenna In' input in the back. Then through the menu, I'm navigating to "Terrestrial automatic scan". In that submenu, 'Country' is set to Ireland, 'FTA Only' is set to No and then I hit search.

In the "Aerial adjustment" menu, 'Ch No' is set to CH00 (142500 KHz), but signal intensity is only 34% and signal quality is 10%. These don't seem to change much at all when i move the aerial, only a slight change when i turn down the gain knob on the aerial.

Feeling awful stupid here. Help appreciated!

With the remote control up buttons move that CH00 up to Ch30. The Green and blue signal bars should then display on your screen. Move the aerial around until you get a stable high signal. When you have the best readings go back and do an auto scan.

Ideally the aerial should be by the window cill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 patrickowens1

    Thanks STB but no joy.

Aerial is close to the window. When I leave it at ch 30, (or any other ch number as far as i can see) there doesn't seem to be any change. But, oddly enough, for the second or 2 each time i press the button to move up through the ch's the signal intensity jumps to 80%. Although signal quality stays fixed at 10%, and then drops back to 34% after about a second. Also, no change when I move it around etc.

Also noticed, that when i go back in to change the ch # again, it's always back at Ch00.

NB I just read the spec on that aerial. It supports 5v power supply from the Ariva. You need to turn this on in the Ariva. Disconnect the power supply to the aerial first. There is a setting in the Ariva System Setup Menu under Other. DVB-T Power On. (You dont need to use the power cable now that came with that aerial).

Now, Go into the Terrestrial Manual Scan Menu.

    Scan Mode by Channel.

Change the Scan Band to UHF (default is VHF)

The Channel No should be CH 30 - you should see a change in the bars. Also Try Ch54.

When you get a reading click down to search. It will find the channels.

Okay, so I tried those channels on UHF - 30 and 54 do give signal intensities of 35% and 45% respectively, so that's def some change anyway. But still no change in signal quality away from 10% and still no channels.

Channel 56 also had 45% but no channels there either. Grrr.

I have never used one of those aerials, but I have seen plenty of complaints about them here on boards. Did you try turning on the dvb-t power option on the ariva and disconnecting the power supply to the aerial?

Where in Dublin are you ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 patrickowens1

Actually, dvb-t power option was already on and i had the aerial plugged in... So i've tried ch30 and ch54 now, with both the option on and the aerial power supply plugged out, and also vice versa. No luck unfortunately.

I'm in Castletroy, Limerick, about 8km from Woodcock hill mast according to saorview.ie...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 patrickowens1

Actually, I've noticed the signal intensity to be better with the aerial's gain turned down or off...

    :)

Your Location under your name says Dublin! Those Ch Numbers I gave you are for Dublin. Hang on I will get you the channel number for Castletroy Limerick. Ch 47 is what you should be manually scanning.

Do not have the DVB-T Ariva Power turned on and the electricity lead connected to the aerial at the same time. Its one or the other.

8km! The indoor aerial should work fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 patrickowens1

    Oh great! slash sorry!

Moved to Limerick a couple of years ago...

Fingers crossed! Are the relevant channels on the saorview site?

A new firmware has been released for the Ariva 250 today, it's version number is V1.21B4.

I've just updated my A250 box and I've done a brand new channel list if anyone is interested,
    here is the download link for it;
    A250ComboV1.21B4-Sorted-Dec2012.abs

As usual, my Irish channels (Ch 52) may not match your location, so delete the terrestrial ones, then rescan and move from the end of the list to the start.

The channel list has 91 Channels with all of the junk ones deleted. No favourites or anything created so it's just a straight-forward channel list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 patrickowens1

Tried it STB, but no luck still!

Dang - was convinced it was gonna work that time! I tried both DVB-T Ariva Power and its own power source but neither makes a difference.

Suppose I'll try ring satellite.ie tomorrow and see if they can shed any light. I tried this evening but no answer...

    Its the aerial patrick.

Bring it back to whoever sold it to you and whack him over the head with it. Thats about how useful it is.
