Why do shops and businesses play christmas music?

Seriously, does anybody actually WANT to listen to "Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer", "Last Christmas" and "Do they know it's christmas time"?

As a customer, it's usually enough to make me turn on the spot and leave the place again. We were staying in a hotel last week, having our dinner in the restaurant and the music was just... well, words fail me. No less than 3 people asked the waiter if there was anything he could do to turn it off, but the poor sod said he couldn't as the sound system was centrally operated for the entire hotel.
Eventually, someone walked out to reception, and shortly after the music was turned off. He was greeted with applaus on returning to his table.

So why do shops, pubs, restaurants etc torture their staff and customers so? And why do we as customers put up with it?
I've stopped going to Tescos altogether for the last few weeks, I now shop exclusively in Aldi and Lidl, simply because they don't try and force this crap on me...

    Because it's Christmas.
Same reason you hear the songs on the radio.

Prob to get us all in the mood for Easter.

Its a scientific fact folk buy bigger eggs listening to cliffs rendition of mistletoe and wine.

    What's this "we" business?

    I like the Christmas music.

It gets me into the spirit of Christmas.

I think most people are the same, otherwise places wouldn't play the music.

Because it works, its like a constant reminder to buy presents as Christmas is coming. It doesn't annoy everyone, it gets some at least into the festive spirit which is what the businesses want.

Tesco and dunnes don't play Christmas songs, they play free stuff with no words, its just bells.

You have stopped shopping in a certain shop because they play Christmas music

Sorry but that is very pathetic!

As someone who used to work in a supermarket, i can tell you that hearing the same 10 christmas songs played over and over again for a month is enough to turn you into a mass murderer.

If anything it should be stopped before a massacre happens in a Tescos or Super Valu.

    Pathetic? Why?
Why on earth should I give money to a place that makes spending any time at all inside their premises this uncomfortable?

Especially when I've got the choice to spend it somewhere I find more agreeable?

Dunno about Dunnes, but the last time I was in a Tesco, Live Aid were howling out of the tannoy...

The scrooges are fairly coming out of the woodwork this morning.

It wouldn't be the same going around the shops in the run up to Christmas with out the music. It creates a nice christmassy atmosphere and in general its just nice to hear the music.

I'd be very disappointed if shops stopped playing Christmas music.

Then do that , I'm sure they will soon realise you've stopped shopping there and cancel the xmas music. Play your cards right they might even send a helicoptor to bring you back and pay out to Aldi and Lidl to release you from their shopping lists.....oh wait..

You're right. I'm sure it was a horrible experience for you.

What I find more annoying than Christmas music, is people who are constantly moaning. You strike me as one of these people. It's Christmas, you don't like music playing so you've decided to shop somewhere its not played...

Why do shops play Christmas music? Because its Christmas.

Why can't you shop in Aldi and avoid Tesco without having a moan to us? I haven't a clue.

So you're saying since Tescos won't care, I should in just put up with their crap music?
    That doesn't make any sense.

No I'm saying the majority of people enjoy it around this time of year and if you don't just shop somewhere else, simple as that really. Freedom of choice , it's great isn't it.

I usually shop in a particular place because they sell what I'm looking for, regardless of the music. Can you get them same items in Lidl/Aldi that you would have be looking for in Tesco. If not, boycotting a shop because of the music is a bit OTT.

When I go into a shop where there isn't Christmas Music playing, I'll sing Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer nice and loudly to cheer up the other shoppers. In fact some of them are so grateful they will step out of the queue and allow me ahead of them. How nice and christmas spirity of them.

Although it is difficult to stop singing it when I start and sometime normal conversation slips into the song....

♫ Then one foggy Christmas eve,
    I gave you a 20 euro note..... ♫

Because the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear

If you had any real convictions (regardless of how stupid they are), you'd avoid them all year round, but something tell me you won't.

Why do they play Christmas music? Because it's fcuking Christmas!

3 weeks of the year Christmas music is played and you're on here moaning about it! Ridiculous.

Can we set up a forum for all the apprentice Grinches to fcuk off to for the next two weeks while the rest of us have the regular chit-chat and festive fun!

    Get behind it, AH! :D
