Ruger 10/22 Conversions

I'm in the USA and and I have a nephew in Galway who just got his brand new licence and a 10/22 a few months ago.

I was considering gifts/accessories I could get for him here in the USA that I could send for xmas. Which brings up questions of legality.

He'd expressed an interest in one of these conversion packages, really its just changing the appearance but is it legal in Ireland?

And how about the large capacity magazines? Are there any regulations on them?

He "could" get into trouble with a conversion like that. If a superintendent thinks it "Looks" like an assault rifle he can deem in necessary for it to have a restricted licence and your nephew would then be in possession of an unlicenced firearm. You can't have high cap mags unless you have a restricted licence 10 rounds is the limit.
Stupid laws made up by ignorant idiots, with nothing better to do.

It certainly would look like an assault rifle. Which is really the only reason for doing it. Purely cosmetic.

The reason I was asking about the mag size was that looking at the picture of that conversion I doubt one of those small round magazines would fit it which means using one of their higher capacity ones.

Stupid laws is right.. here is another choice which is the route Id be taking if I had a 10/22

Some nice volquartsen parts would be a better present for a 10/22 owner than a cosmetic kit, although its possible posting them constitutes arms trafficking with our stupid laws.

You may also wish to have a look at the Kidd parts and accessories.

To the OP, do you travel to Ireland much?

As for magazines, the Irish gun laws are similar to CA, NY, NJ, MA, and the like. High capacity mags are a no-no. Otherwise, this mag would be my first suggestion.

Does your nephew have a scope? That may be the easiest and best gift to source.

If you are worried about the mag not being long enough butler creek make a mag that might fit the bill and it is a 10 round mag too.

A friend of mine here in the LA area makes a Thompson makeover kit.
He glues the fake hi-cap mag body onto the bottom of the standard ruger magazine, I guess you could do something like that to have a long magazine that looks "right" and can be gripped to be removed, but still be 10 rounds or less.

Either way the fact that its an assault weapon lookalike after being dressed up may prohibit you.

If the above sentence is inapplicable and you can indeed dress up the rifle legally, I've also seen folks buy airsoft rifles and work over the internals such that a 1022 action and barrel fits and fires

Could I post some links to some questionable designs? They're all from Cabela's, which is a popular sporting goods chain. All of these involve Pistol grips which i hope doesn't have any military connotations.

(I'm assuming a folding stock would be a non-no?)

I'd say if the super saw any of those he'd be telling you to get a restricted licence because of how they look, sure a standard 10/22 could be put in one of those stocks without the super knowing but you're breaching the terms of your licence and could potentially lose every firearm in your posession.

Crazy but those the rules:p

Its the pistol grip isnt it? And the black colour too probably.

I suppose the regulations are really to protect offending the sensibilities of unsuspecting members of the public more than anything else.

It's not the pistol grip alone...the ISSF guys use rifles with pistol grips no problem, it's the whole lot together; telescopic stock, pistol grip, black. We know it doesn't change the function of the rifle at all but it doesn't matter what we think:pac:

Check out the Youtube clip below. It's a Ruger 10/22 that has been adapted to look like the futuristic guns in the film Aliens.

It's fully automatic so I wouldn't be in favour of it, but from a cosmetic point of view I think it is class.

Be very careful about sending any accessories to anyone outside the U.S.A. as they may have a dual use classification . This means they can be used in both a military /civilian application and are restricted items requiring a export license from the U.S. Government .
Cabelas got themselves in trouble for exporting scopes and if I remember correctly one of the countries they exported to was Ireland . Most of the item's they exported were B.S.A. Red Dot scopes which went to Canada .

I think that would be fine. Remember though it is only my own opinion and a super could have a different more ignorant one. LoL.
It dose'nt look in any way military or assault rifle like to me though. It looks more like something a target shooter would have.:)

I'm learning to appreciate the difference between thumbhole and pistol grip.

But I'd be happier if the same design came in wood though. I think that would eliminate any doubt.

I would'nt worry it is grand.
If you want a stock like that in wood though boyds make one. I would'nt worry about most of the pistol grip stocks unless it is obviously trying to mimic an "assault rifle" look. even though an ar is'nt an assault rifle:rolleyes:

Just as a follow up. I bought one of these for my nephew and sent it from USA, it seemed to pass the Irish Customs without an issues.
