    The word is not 'moth' or 'mot' but 'motte' a word of French or Spanish origin meaning "A tuft of human or animal hair standing up on the head or body". It has also been associated with a small grove of trees or a copse on a prairie or a man-made mound or hillock on which a castle was built.

    Another "lady-garden" word.
