The picture of your man with the rabbit in the link gave it away to me that the rabbit is still alive.

That could have been an old picture though!

I was just listening to the RTE 1 Radio news a few minutes ago and they interviewed Mr. Byrne who confirmed that Barney, his rabbit is alive and well It looks like the Indo got it wrong in their news report.

And what about the 2 dogs he also has with him? Wild rabbits would normally be out in a field in a burrow where it's warm and they have plenty of food. Not on some dudes lap on a bridge.

You're serious? The man is homeless and you are wondering how the rabbit is? Dogs also don't need bedrooms to be healthy and well looked after and I am sure these animals get a lot of care.

Yes, but lets not fail to be happy with a half decent sentence, based on the fact other sentences are far too short.

i've no idea what sort of guy who done this was or if he has previous (he sounds like a right wánker regardless) but filling the prisons with these type of idiots is a waste of time, a donation of maybe a thousand euro to the homeless chap and 4 months working for an animal shelter would probably be a more fitting punishment imo

I wouldn't let that guy 'volunteer' in any animal shelter, not in a million years.

not 'volunteer' but have him clean out dog kennels or whatever other shítty jobs they have, it could educate him while teaching him a lesson

but yeah i wouldn't let him near my rabbit tbh :)

4 months sounds right but the sentencing coming out of our courts just arent in synch with each other.

Yesterday, a man was let off for punching a toddler in the head.

"The boy suffered permanent damage to the cartilage in his ear, which a doctor said was typically found in injuries suffered by adult rugby players."
"He was requested to post a bail bond of €100 and to keep the peace for 12 months."

I don't think I've ever gone through such a swing of emotions in such a short space of time, from reading the start of your post and being real sad to being over joyed that Barney survived after reading the edit. :D

The most shocking aspect to this story is that the homeless man has been on the streets for 23 years.

Anyone found guilty of cruely to rabbits should be locked away forever with the key to their cell thrown into the Liffey.

yes it was a shítty thing to do but i find it hard to be overjoyed at this sentence when you see child abusers getting suspended sentences

    Never understood this argument.
Surely you're in favour of harsher sentences for child abusers, rather than more lenient ones for rabbit-drowners?

    the sentence is ridiculous tbh

the sentence is unfair in my opinion ? im glad people see him as scum and all cause thats what he is
but compare his sentence to the many child abusers as well as a previous poster mentioned the toddler who got a full force punch in the face and the father got away with it on bail? country is ****ed
judges give harsher punishments out for trying to kill rabbits then fathers who nearly kill their kids , does that not send a really messed up message? :L

It is cruel without a doubt this story but at the same time I can go out with a gun and as kill as many rabbits as I fancy within the law of the land.

I imagine (not that I agree with it) that his 138 previous convictions had a significant effect on the sentence. Most Child Abusers are put under a microscope after the first conviction.

coursing too, with more than 10,000 spectators visting clonmel for it annually... not exactly chucking rabbits into the liffey but just as distressing for the rabbits i'd imagine

So, guy can't put a roof over his head, but is perfectly capable of looking after 2 dogs and a rabbit and keeping them healthy? Tell you what, you keep a rabbit and two dogs locked out in your back garden and rarely feed them, then we'll see how quick the DSPCA are taking them off you.

How do you know he rarely feeds them? I can see why you'd assume it, but there is no evidence to show he neglects the animals- on the contrary all we know for certain about his treatment of his animals is that he will go to crazy lengths to protect them.

A 4 month sentence for a youth seems fair, but the fella who done it is 20, hardly a youth so should of got more time.

And the guy who hit his child in Dungarvan gets no jail time !!!

Just because the law isn't harsh enough on the scum you mentioned, it doesn't make it right for thsi either.

Chap whould of been locked up for longer. Disgrace!

the rabbit thrower had 138 convictions?

Yea like we all know how successful prison has been at defeating criminal behaviour throgh the ages....duh!

Prison serves three purposes - Punishment, Protection of Society, Rehabilitation.

This fuckrod needs to be punished. Check.
Society is safer for three months while he's out of circulation. Check.
I don't give a flying fuck whether he gets rehabilitated. Check.

So you are happy that his current sentence is merely the postponement of his next crime, thus society is not really any safer, so the jail term is a waste.

So basically, he already has 138 previous convictions and he gets a 4 month sentence that will run while he is still in prison for another offence?

    That shows him....

I agree with you - let's lock him in a concrete room until he dies. Then we are all safe, no postponement.

It's not about rehabilitation, its not about making society "safer". It's about punishing the criminal. Anything else is an insidious and wilful attempt at social engineering of the worst type.
