My first text was to my mate, "Snorkel jacket jumpers from outer space."

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

2001, got my first phone for my 14th birthday from my dad, a motorola :)
Cant remember my first text message tbh, it was probably a test one to my dad or mam to see if it worked okay etc or else a message saying welcome or youve just topped up or something :pac:

With the battery life on the vast majority of them, hardly.

Tea_Bag- of course I own one. And apart from checking FB, or checking the news (particularly the football results in work, as Im in Australia) really they have little else going for them.

What a silly post. You might as well say the internet has no purpose other than facebook and the odd bit of news checking.

I have no facebook account and use the internet on my phone loads, too much probably.

I remember when text messages were free!! They didn't predict how popular they would become. Eventually they started charging, but for some reason those of us who had 088 numbers continued to have free texts while 087 people had to pay. Until they eventually figured out how to charge. Good days!

Yup, infact, it was the same at the start of "GSM" also, the 087 Texts were free for a good while through Vodafone (or Eircell as it was known)

I remember the first one I sent, off my 088 Motorola brick (that also took 4AA batteries if you had no charger) I was 17, to my then girlfriend of the time that I would meet her after work, sure she never got it as she didn't know how to open it until I showed her.....

    Good times..... :D

I remember a couple of months later moving over to GSM on my phillips Diga phone..... :pac:

    What a phone :

My first text was to my brother who was in Australia at the time. It was sent off another brother's Phillips savvy phone and I think it was in 1998.

    LOL.

Would take me all night to list the things I use my smart phone for.

I remember the Motorolla 088 phones alright but did they have texts on them, i was sure that texts came to later models like the Phillips, i used to get a new phone every 3/4 months as my brother used to work in the shop and he used to get me all the latest models, i remember one of the phones had a 2 line screen on it and the text used to scroll across it. it was either a Phillips or an alcatel.

The First text i recieved was from my mam telling me to get home for dinner, i didnt recieve it for hours as the phone was left underneath the jumpers for goalpost :D

My first phone was a Panasonic GDsomething :D Had terrible battery life - if you lost coverage....like you'd do all the time here, the battery would drain so quickly. My first text was to my brother in London........"Guess what I got" lol. Still have the phone somewhere but couldn't be bothered looking for it at this time of night :D

First text I received was in February 2000,I was in 6th class and had 'borrowed' my older brothers fancy new Ericsson GA628 phone to show off in school and pretend it was mine.My best friend at the time came from a dodgy criminal family, thus he had a mobile of his own,so we SMS messaged insults back and forth to each other in class. The auld teacher thought the message tones were coming from a gameboy.

We also did lots of prank calls to the pirate radio station that played Maniac 2000 over and over again,at yard time.
