Jesus i know people take the píss out of Liverpool fans for living in the past but you cant even give out when they say it when you see people acting like they do in here lately.

Maxi, Kuyt and Bellamy brought nothing to the team last season, they wanted to leave. It suited everyone that the 3 left.

    Bit harsh.

Did Dirk actually say he wanted to leave? Can't quite remember. I don't think he said anything of the sort and if he did, it was very late on in the day before his eventual departure to Fenerbache. Stand to be corrected on that of course. But either way, as a squad member who'd only play as a striker I'd have kept him kept after our cock up in the striker department.

I said it numerous times in the past that while I wished we had played them far more than they did last season and if possible, keep them beyond the summer I hope it happens.

But I accept it's unrealistic and those two certainly wanted out by the time Rodgers came in. As I eluded to and a few others have already said, they were treated horribly last season game time wise. Forget starting minutes which had me fuming many a time last season, but even just coming off the bench far more than they did!

Maxi got plenty of chances. The problem he had that while he was great at finding chances and popping up with the odd goal, his overall play was pretty poor. He had the brain, but to me, it seemed like he just didn't have the legs.

Kuyt clearly struggled in his final season for us, even in the big games.

He was on huge wages for a player that you can't even play regularly.

As I remember it Maxi got his chances in the coca cola cup... and guess what.. but I agree long term the legs were gone.

I dont like to play accountant, someone gets a lotta money to do that job.

Bellamy was coming to the end but he was one of our best players.

Anyway, these guys are long gone

    You cannot replace certain players.

As good (perhaps even great) as Rafa was at Liverpool, the Xabi Alonso debacle still hovers over his legacy like a smelly fart in a small room. Alienating Xabi was one thing, but trying to replace him with one of LFC's worst ever signings in Aquaman was a double calamity which turned us from top 4 regulars to mid table mediocrity. Along with Masch leaving, we've never really recovered from that.

    Lucas says hello.

As an out and out goalscorer, Torres hasnt been replaced. Suarez is a much better footballer though.

Mascherano has not been replaced. Lucas, as influential as he is, has not played enough football to be classified as being at the level of Masch yet.

Mascherano was the best in his position in the world IMO.

Lucas is a cracking player, but he is getting better and better the more games he misses in alot of ways. Never have I seen a players value rocket, the more games he misses with injury.

I'm not having a pop, just saying that a little perspective is needed.

Andy Carroll was the like for like replacement for Torres

Find it a bit amazing that people wanted us to persist with three 32 year old wingers who were quite clearly in decline.

Why do people insist on calling the League Cup/Capital One Cup by ten year old+ names?

and if everything went to play we would be stuck with Barry

If that is your honest assessment of Bellamy you need a rest

He scored 6 league goals last season. He couldnt play 2 games in a row. What use was he?

Lucas in the squad for Saturday :)
Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Lucas Leiva will return to the Liverpool squad for Saturday's clash with Southampton at Anfield.

The Brazil midfielder has been sidelined since August 26 due to a thigh injury, but has returned to full training at Melwood in recent weeks and turned out for the Reds' U21s against Middlesbrough last Friday.

Lucas will now come into contention for the weekend visit of the Saints, while Joe Cole will also return from injury.

Rodgers told reporters at Melwood: "The squad is fine.

"Joe Cole will come back into contention. He had a scan on an injury but that showed up fine, so he should be available again at the weekend.

"Lucas Leiva will return to the squad, which is great news because he's been working very, very hard and played the reserve game last week.

"He's been training for a few weeks and looked very good, so we'll look forward to bringing him back in.

"Other than that, the mood is very good and we're really looking forward to the game."

Lucas's return to first-team action will be greeted with delight by everyone connected with the club.

Not least Rodgers, who believes the No.21's comeback will give the team a big boost.

The boss said: "He's very much looking forward to it. He's worked tirelessly in his recovery. We're just trying to nudge him along and make sure it's the right time.

"He had a few weeks of training before he played his reserve game. He looked very capable in that game and he's has another week of training and I don't think he can go any further with regards to training.

"His next step is games, so hopefully in the next couple of weeks he'll get opportunities to play and improve his football fitness.

"Mentally he's a tough boy. His mental fitness is very strong and he's looking forward to helping the team.

"It's a big boost because he's well in tune with what we're trying to do here. He's been kicking his heels on the side wanting to help his mates and the group, so I am delighted to have him back.

"He's a good guy and has a lot to offer the team, both on and off the field, and it'll be great to have him back in the squad."

Can anyone tell me why we didn't play in red last night ?

I have said since the start of the season, that this year is all about rebuilding. If our aim is to secure Champions League football, then Brendan Rodgers is taking the correct steps. We have a manager who has been successful, and has very definite ideas on the philosophy of how he wants this club to operate. We are controlling matches and while we aren't looking the complete product, you can see what we are trying to do. More than half of the big wage-earners who underperformed are already off the books, and while there's a few still of these still at the club (Downing, Cole, Carragher), by the time we start next season they should be gone. In their place, we are blooding some of the best and most exciting youngsters in the country. Despite us taking key players out of the under-21's (Suso, Wisdom and Sterling), our lads are unbeaten and are destroying other teams.

The future is looking brighter. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be able to judge the progress until next season.

I would guess it is one of the contracted matches they have to wear the away kit for.

Same reason as Sunday against Swansea. Shirt sales.

We do? What does "successful" mean to you in a footballing context?

re: Kuyt - I know he wasn't brilliant by any means last season but still retained his penchant for scoring in big games (ie. ManU in the FA Cup)

re: Bellamy - contributed a few goals too in big games, ManCity in the Rumbelows Cup springs to mind for example.

Don't think either them would improve the current team tbh

while getting the odd goal in big games is nice, its more important to have someone who can break down the 'weaker' teams consistently and turn draws into wins.

Has won just as many meaningless trophies as Kenny has done since 1995.

Some people just have no vision, be it the running of the club or whatever.

If any of you think Sterling shouldnt get rested for at least 4 or 5 games you dont really know how things should work. You are probably the same crew who thought Insua had come on great and after xmas thought he was a joke player.

It isnt about level of performance, its about nurturing talent and not letting players get burnt out, which happens quicker at that age. Insua got burnt out, we dont need that happening to Sterling.

A small rest during a season (or long period of starting every game) for whatever reason does wonders for some players, Enrique's performances over the last 3 games is an example in our own set up.

No, im simply asking who you and the lads who agree with you would like to see in place of Sterling for 4/5 matches so he can have a rest. Downing? Assaidi? Cole?

We have a manager who has been successful

One year at Watford, Six months at Reading, Two seasons at Swansea City coming up in the play off game. Not winning the league. Before joining Liverpool.

I'm sorry but if that is successful we might as well get Big Sam in he won the league of Ireland with Limerick and brought West Ham up in the play offs as well.

Amazingly, Kenny has well over twice as many top flight management games under his belt since 1995 compared to Rodgers (this is not a good thing for the latter btw) - but he's managed for a handful of those 17 years. You need to stop saying 'what has he done in 17 years?' like it is some damning indictment of his managerial ability. He wasn't managing for the vast majority of that time period - and he has still won as much as Harry ****ing Redknapp despite it.
