Philo for me a remember my whole family were sitting at the table and it was announced on the radio. Complete shock at the time. He was a hero to my older brothers.

Mick Karn; Part of my youth went with him. I guess I realised that I was getting old when my teenage heroes start to die.

Melanie Appleby; Sad loss and I remember her appearing on Wogan just before she died.

Dan Wheldon; I remember thinking as I was watching the race, that it looked very dodgy and something bad was going to happen.

Greg Moore; Shocking accident that was shown live. One of the worst things I have ever seen on TV.

Ayrton Senna; I just never believed that it could happen to him.

Jimmy Saville, still haven't found anyone to fix it ever since. :(

    Still feel this way?

Diana was the first person I remember who had died and was famous. It struck me, as a 10 year old, how it can happen to anyone and any time and that was scary for me.

Gerry Ryan. Started listening to him when I started my job 5 years ago. We were allowed listen to our mp3 while working ( admin job) anyway my mornings would fly by listening to his funny stories and take on life, trying to hold the laughing in at times was a challenge! Day I heard of his death was over hearing colleagues talking about it 11am or so , hadn't been listening to the radio that day. Was so shocked and remember just freezing, was just such a shock, and then confusion as no one knew exactly if it was true. So I plugged in my trustee mp3 only to hear it confirmed on the 2fm news. It was like losing a friend, my mornings would never be quite the same again. Selfish perhaps I know. I'm Always grateful tho to have had those few years of listening in, some people may think he was boastful and arrogant but I think he was just honest.

I'll be fairly upset if I ever die.

Joe Strummer. Came as a complete shock. I'd seen him play a show in Liverpool exactly 1 month to the day before he died. This turned out to be his last ever gig it was amazing btw. He was quite an influence on me musically and attitude world viewpoint etc. Could do with him and more like him around now.

Michael Jackson for me too :(
I've never batted an eyelid for anyone else's death though. Celebrity or not :L

Kind of a weird one, but the death of Pavarotti really saddened me. I found his singing incredible, and he always just seemed to me like a (very talented) great big loveable cuddly teddy bear.:D Obviously never met the man so didn't know him at all, but in interviews he always came across as a very nice man, something fatherly about him. There was something about him that reminded me of my own Dad, probably mostly his smile and deep chuckle.
His funeral was extremely moving to watch with all the beautiful classical powerful songs including his own voice being played where he had sang a duet with his dad many years previously. Something very sad but nice about hearing his wonderful voice being played at his own funeral alongside his dads voice. I was surprised by how sad I felt about his death.

Don't think of myself as a cold person but I'm usually very "meh" when I hear of a celebrity dying and don't really think too much about it. I was shocked though when Gerry Ryan died, and found it strange to think that would never hear his voice on the radio again. Wasn't a massive fan or anything, but he was just someone who was very familiar to me, and seemed like one of those people who was there for years and would always kinda be there in the background on a radio so a big shock when he died.

If I don't die before them, I think the deaths of David Attenborough, Patrick Moore, and Stephen Fry would also sadden me.
I'd obviously never be extremely upset over the death of a celebrity who I've never even met, but a small few who I really like to listen to would definitely give me a small feeling of sadness and/or sentimentality.

Whitney Houston's death had more of an impact on me than Michael Jackson for some unknown reason. I loved her in the Bodyguard. Despite been so beautiful and unbelievably talented she really seemed very depressed which is very sad.

No celebrity deaths have upset me. I was a bit disappointed at the deaths of Kurt Cobain, Michael Hutchins and Freddie Mercury. The Queen song Those were the days of our lives, always makes me teary eyed.

I remember Princess Diana's death as I was just out of hospital after abdominal surgery and I was spending a lot of time on the sofa, too sore to lie down and it came on the news. I think I only remember because of the abdominal pain.

I was shocked at quite a few but what stunned me the most i think was Neil Armstrong as i like astronomy and space and don't really care or pay any interest in other "Celebrities"

As mentioned previously, for me Sennas death still haunts 20 years after seeing his crash live.

Poor Schumacher doesnt look in good shape, if he doesnt make it, that will upset me also. Hope he makes a full recovery but its looking very slim at this stage. :(

Murray Walker also will be sadly missed.

These were the giants for me really when it came to my initial F1 fascination back in late 1993 and into 1994.
