Hi All,

I'm considering doing this course in September 2013. Does anyone know anything about it? I'm a keen crafter, coming from a family of dressmakers (although have only taken up the craft in the last two years). I do some night classes already and my teacher thinks this would be good for me. I'm being made redundant next year after 13 years in the same job. I am a bit apprehensive, but I am seriously thinking of giving it a go. I'm trying to get in contact with someone in CSN to go and have a chat with them about it.

Anyone have any feedback for me.

You do realise that this is a level 6 course, and that you need a level 5 in Art or equivalent? It may be that your existing experience and a portfolio might be acceptable as the 'equivalent', but you would need to enquire.

It sounds like a lovely course!

Looks like i really need to get some guidance from someone, am ashamed to say I wouldn't even know anything about putting a portfolio together :-( I really need to speak with them and see what the story is

A portfolio doesn't have to be as complicated as it sounds. If you have photographs of things you have made that would be good, also you need samples of work that you could do up specially - pieces of fabric with samples of stitches and processes that you mount tidily onto sheets and put in a folder.

It doesn't have to be a huge, fancy zipped portfolio, provided it shows off your work.

You would also need to show sketches of designs and ideas, for this level you would need to show that you have creative abilities as well as sewing abilities.

Having said that, level 6 is still only the equivalent of first year third level. The standard you would be looking at for your portfolio would be around leaving cert.

If you feel really doubtful about the above you might consider doing the Art course that they require, this would help you create a portfolio and show whether you have the creative skills to continue on.

Either way you do need to make some enquiries, you may well find there will be an open day, quite likely in the near future when you could see samples of work and get information.

Well you have eased my mind a bit. I have photographs of most of the things I have made, and I also have samples of my work also. I'm not too good at drawing but I can do some sketching alright. I might consider doing Art as a night class before then, to help me with a portfolio, but my first port of call is to meet someone from there, and see what they would require as "equivalent". To be honest, I was never good at drawing in school, which is the only thing thats putting me off, but i'm creative with fabric and embelleshments and so on.

I have completed some NCVA and London Chamber exams, but that was back in 1994/1995, and I don't know if that will help things, but it's worth a shot.

Don't worry about drawing skills, you need to be able to show what you are thinking, but actual drawing skills are not the primary requirement, creativity is what matters.
