    On this forum for example but still have an active account?

    I know someone who died and on their FB page it is still open and people were posting well wishes on their wall.
    It still open and the relatives want it that way.

    Does anyone know if anyone on Boards is dead but that their account is still open?

    A bit morbid I know.

    I presume that every "boardsie" that has died has an open account, it would be kind of hard for them to close it.

    Im sure that someone would ask a mod or something to close a persons account if they knew they had passed away.

    Im asking because of the FB page a girl had but they have not closed it or asked it to be closed which I think is strange.

    yeah two people on facebook, both boards members. I see their faces pop up once a year for birthdays at least, always depressing.

    Weird thread. I knew a cat who died a couple of years back, I was pretty tight with him, his FB is still open, its kinda comforting.

    Only family can request it to be closed, death certificate is required for this.

    Some families find it comforting to see friends still remember stuff and post on their page, I find it a bit weird myself.

    FB will memorialise an account if requested, ie. Can't be searched if not already friends etc. I did this for someone last year, it's comforting at times. No matter what you believe, sometimes its good just to post something on their wall, or look at a photo.

    Don't see how different it is to somebody kneeling in a large room, with their hands together, talking to themselves

    Its a good point, who owns the intellectual property rights of your on line accounts. Should boards or facebook for instance have policies in place for the removal/closure of accounts to protect the deceased?

    Yes, there are a few boardsies who have died and still have active accounts. I know of one brilliant, well loved young man who died and still has an active account. His brother still posts here.

    fb do, you can have complete removal of accounts if you wish, once proof is furnished

    There was someone on the BBC Radio a few days ago offering this as a service.

    Like a will, you give them PWs of your accounts and they will shut things down after you die. Strange idea but I guess some people would get it.

    I think the family should close all accounts of the person, I've seen horrible things written on peoples social media, granted 95% of people pay tribute but there's always a few sickos. I suppose getting the password may be a problem, do site administrators have the ability to get the password?
