Holland to ban sale of 'skunk' weed in coffee shops

Rather than stop foreign tourists smoking weed in coffee shops the Dutch Government has now decided to make a move on banning high strength varieties. Perhaps no harm as all these potent strains are seriously genetically modified and cannot be that good for you. :p.

Super-strength weed to be banned from Holland's coffee shops under tough new laws that could see 'skunk' reclassified as a class A drug.

Dutch justice minister Ivo Opstelten wants the country's famous licensed cafes to only sell cannabis containing less than 15 per cent of the main active chemical, THC.

The decision will be a major blow to hundreds of coffee shop owners, many of them in Amsterdam, who will have to replace around 80 per cent of their stock with weaker varieties.

    And sell twice as much.

Let's burn more plant material..........that'll be good for the users lungs.

They keep saying they'll do things to make people go there on holidays now, before it's "too late"

The drugs are all completely illegal here and look at how easy they are to get. They'll just move the sales from safe cafes to the many many many proper dealers, if this actually goes through.

    Not going to happen.

I could never see the point of smoking really strong weed in a coffee shop. It just mongs you out completely; there's no social aspect to it.

Eh didnt this happen a couple of years ago?

As far as i know they reclassified strong hash and weed a few years back.

Two weeks later "Holland reverses decision to ban super strong weed"

I dont mind these kind of decisions really. I think anything over 18% is a bit too much. Smoked "Tutankhamon" strain once, its meant to be between 25%-35% and it was a bit too much to really enjoy. Once it remains legal, certain regulations are fine with me and anyway, 15% will easily get the average person baked plenty.

Why bother going into a coffee shop for strong skunk when you can buy crack on the streets.

Glad they're giving up on their plan for a total ban.

As if 5 million people a year were ever going to travel to Amsterdam to go look at Ann Franks ****ing kiphole attic.

Whether you enjoy weed or not (partial to a bit of "cheese" myself), it cannot be denied a drugs ban was going to ruin the tourism industry.

It's a beautiful city and Anne Frank's house is a national treasure there and a reminder of the brutality of facism. There's far more to it than dope and hookers, although I do like my dope and hookers...

Anyway skunk is horrible, if I were to partake I'd much rather the lighter stuff.

I've lived in Amsterdam and while I've visited many of the museums and other tourist attractions, I've no idea where Anne Franks house is.

She was really good at hiding.

I didn't know she was caught til I went to that house. I always thought she lived happily ever after. That ruined my day let me tell you.

(this is entirely true btw :o)

Yeh. Skunk. I've no idea what that's like but I had a space muffin once was out of the ballgame, United scored against Liverpool and I only copped it a few minutes later despite staring at the telly.

    I prefer the giggly stuff.

We should legalise it here, would bring in loads of tourists and the money earned would help pay off the Anglo Bondholders.

    What? LOL

Yes, of all GM products this would be one of the most fcuked about with.

New strains are constantly being developed to produce the max output of THC with other cross strains to developed to withstand cold, pest and disease resistant, dwarf strains with high output, yields designed to produce only female seed for seed factories. etc.

Seed factories have even mastered seeds that will produce just one crop only. If you tried producing seeds from they won't work. This is designed to safeguard their products and make you having to go back to them and buy more.

In all the stuff is up to 75% more potent than it was 25 years ago.

When we smoked weed in collage it was manageable, you could go outside for a lunch time toke and then back into class and be able to concentrate. The stuff produced these days would waste you for the whole afternoon. :)

How else do you expect them to come up with all these new strains every year?

Every year there seems to be a new buzz word in the weed industry, one year it's "Bubblegum", another year "White widow", then "Purple Hayes". each year the stuff develops new character. There is even a cup designated to the best strain that are developed by seed manufacturers in the year. :)

He's right. Go on any seedbank and look at what they're offering. All types of feminized, auto-flowering SuperBlueCheese AK47. There's a whole load of engineering going into breeding now and it's why you can get more potency/stability than used to be the case.

Bubblegum is usually a Big Skunk male mated to a Northern Lights female.
If you class pollination as genetic modification then I'm afraid you have a bit to learn.

I have a mate who's quite the botanist when it comes to this stuff, I think he is speaking the truth. Feminised seeds are dearer but you can buy them, and they seem to produce stronger and stronger strains. It's like inhaling an instant panic attack these days, some of the stuff.

Auto flowering................... like mating a non photo-period ruderalis strain to a sativa/indica, so that the offspring flowers due to its maturity instead of just reacting to the length of daylight.

Female seeds created by stressing a female cannabis plant to the point that it becomes hermaphrodite plant, and then using the pollen from its male flowers on another female.

    Serious genetic modification there folks.

These are techniques used for hundreds of years by nurserymen, on any and all plants.

What's next.......... the dangers of grafting?

Mightn't be such a bad thing. Weed is a paradox of chemicals; you have THC which can have psychotic effects as well as cannabidol which has neuroprotective qualities. From what I understand, the higher the THC:CBD ratio, the harder the strain is on the old noggin.

On a personal level, I've never been a fan of the really strong heady strains. The negative side effects- paranoia, introvertedness, slowness etc - only seem to manifest themselves with a strong smoke. If I have a mild toke with the lads it's all chats and laughs. Get our hands on some more potent stuff, though, and it's more sitting around in silence for a few hours, punctuated only with a befuddled call to Domino's.

The worst boutof paranoia I ever got was over in a coffee shop in the 'Dam. Two of us had chest infections and for some reason we decided to roll reefers. Pure weed tears the throat off you and and half way through we just started coughign our lungs up. We looked like complete weed virgins - didn't help that the reefer my mate had rolled looked like it had the bad AIDS - and we were surrounded by these dreadlocked ****ers, professional tokers, who may or may not have been laughing/staring at us. Whether or not it was all in my head, the fear kicked in like never before and the millisecond it took to get up and out the door was more time than I wanted to stay in the place. Probably set some sort of record for the fastest land speed by a person who's baked...

Cheese is good for that so. One of the easier to find varieties, and one of the cheapest too.

I'm surprised that the Evening Herald has not picked up on this. :p

Not to mention all these toxic chemicals that are available from kit form to further boost, poison and stress your genetically modified plants to the max.

I don't mind smoking a bit of weed that has been grown naturally down someone's back garden but not the stuff that has been artificially produced by drug dealers for profit. Drug dealers don't give two sh*ts what goes into a plant as long as they can get the maximum yield from them.

I also couldn't see a problem with legalising the natural home growing of cannabis for PU as in some countries. This would avoid people having to put up with some of the toxic muck that is sold by dealers.

I think people are getting genetic modification with practices that have been around for centuries. Current methods involve cross polination. If that's genetic modification, than an inter racial couple are guilty of genetic manipulation.

The methods they use just involve polinating one strain with a different strain (that involves shaking one plant next to another. Yes, it's that scientific) and hopefully making a stronger strain.

    Not genetically modified......
A good soil base, molasses, nettle brew, and comfrey brew is a lot cheaper than those potions.
Safer too if you are easily scared.

    Now you are talking sense.
