The Internet does seem particularly keen to discredit the WiiU in any way possible. Some reasons are not entirely without cause, but I can't imagine many devices would respond particularly favourable if power was lost during firmware installation. The 0.0001% chance of the power failing while someone's updating is a risk I'm sure most companies are happy to live with. A non-issue, really. The slowness of the download, on t'other hand...

Anyway, today in 'Games for Retr0'... NSFW, of course.

I already played the DS version of that game, well actually it was sarah that showed me it after I told her about it. It involves touching moe girls and making them cream their panties to reveal if they are a witch or not... as you do.

As for the WiiU bricking while the firmware is being updated and power is lost, sure it's the same with every piece of electronics. It's far more favourable than, as Ciderman found out, the PS3 which is very vulnerable to bricking from just updating the firmware with not power loss.

Ciderman what happened to your PS3? Did you use the older Waninkoko firmware hack back in the day or something?

It killed itself, as most modern gen consoles tend to do. They can't stand the heat

I'm pretty sure it was a bad firmware flash that did it. IIRC he sent it to be reballed and the guys said they couldn't do anything about it. If it was just heat problems then a reballing would have sorted it.

I'm fairly sure it died soon after a Sony firmware upgrade no? Sometimes, if the mobo gets warped, a reball won't fix it so it could have been that too...which is why nobody should do those hairdryer/towel fixes, they warp the board.

Also, depending on who quoted him, they may have only been able to reflow

Yep. Have seen people complaining that it only supports up to 2TB on external hard drives.

I'm sure how you would ever need that much capacity for an unmodded console.

What size internal memory does it come with?

Just 32GB on the premium model. But it supports SD and external hard drives, you really can't argue with that.

Comes in 8 and 32gb flavours.

Expandable via sd card and external hard drives.

Aye that sounds fair enough. Do the games come on DVD like the Wii, can you load them onto the internal memory I wonder? I'm out of the loop with this WiiU lark. :o

It's sort of a 'I can't believe it's not BluRay' deal with the discs.

But it looks like they're moving to make their online service a bit Steam-like. They're certainly offering indie developers a good deal by letting them set their own prices and roll out patches for free. It's really expensive to roll out a patch on Xbox.

Have they finally sorted out the mess of online gaming, as in having one name online instead of faffing about with friend codes?

They're just Chinese gambling machines. Granted, a waste of cabinets, but nothing of proper gaming-value was lost.

Could anyone here speak for the quality of Nights: Journey of Dreams on the Wii?

Just a reminder that if you're taking part in the A&R secret Santa to pm me your addresses ASAP. The sooner I get everyone the more time you have to get a gift. Even if you are going to the beers, I still need addresses incase your Santa isn't attending.

Regarding the fate of my lovely 60gb ps3, I had downloaded the latest update, 3.61 maybe, so many devices so many firmware versions, and switched her on and the screen exhibited a bit of tearing and bam, that was that. Ylod.
Sony did nothing, despite that update having killed many machines indeed, I registered my displeasure but all they offered me was a replacement for refurb money.
They were certain that many consoles of that age were dying and they were outside of the warranty,
I sent it for reballing and repair but it was toasted, seems a frakked up firmware install is more likely but there was no issue my end, maybe they were the ones having trouble but buried the problem.
The console still lives under the desk at home, not sure what to do with it, possibly has my details on it so I can't sell it, plus there's photos and videos on it but I can turn the machine on so I can't recover them :(
Hence why it was over a year before I replaced it with another and even then only because of an unexpected trade.

Friend bailed on me at the last minute but I'm just out of that GameCityNights talk at the science gallery.

Was very interesting and white entertaining. Anybody else from here at it tonight?

You could recover it with an E3 flasher.

I don't know what that is, and with a 250gb slim model in the front room, I guess I'll never need to know.
But it'll be interesting to see if the truth ever comes out about it.
A lot of launch PS3's died with that update, but because the install base was relatively small of those machines, or even those machines that had made it that far, it didn't make much of splash.
Pity, because I felt really p1ssed off with Sony over it.

I remember posting about it in the Playstation forum and getting less than sympathetic replies from other PS3 owners.

My 360 snuffed it around the same time, but 360 owners seem to be far more measured when it comes to faith in the design nous of MS, that is they know the 360 host lots of great games, even great exclusives but that doesn't preclude Microsoft from making a dogs dinner of the internal architecture of the console, nor does it make you some sort of Nazi for suggesting they could have done better on the Xbox forum,
not so on the PS forum....
As if Sony, or any of them, give a toss about any one of us, aside from what they can get us to spend money on next!

One of the reasons I'll never connect my 60GB PS3 up to the net again.

Ah, I'm having more fun with a region free PS2 anyway!

Honestly, being hung up on only the current and next gen consoles is like only liking cinema or books from the last 5 years, imagine all the awesome stuff you'd miss!

I think Nights on the Wii is decent enough, I reckon some of the Wii's back catalogue will require some distance to appreciate it, so it sheds it's minigame/casual gamer cloak and we can properly enjoy the Metroid Prime Trilogy and the rest.

Imagine my joy though to find out that the only way to have fun with Mario Sunshine on the WiiU is to buy it again, from their VC! No happiness with your proper copy! And you'll have to wait for the GC emu to be delivered via future update.

Now, I am realistic about backwards compatibility, so why say "no playing original GC disks on the WiiU" but make it capable of running the code just fine?
Won't the drive read a GC format disk?
Are they afraid of the homebrew that uses the format? (I suspect this is true)

Homebrew is already confirmed working on WiiU via several of the old Wii hack methods (smash stack and others).

Finished the Valkyria Chronicles anime and it was very disappointing. What it did do was remind me of how great the game was. If anyone has a PS3 and doesn't own the game you owe it to yourself to get it.

Not necessarily, it crucial parts of the flash are lost, there's no way to rebuild a proper image without having a verified firmware dump in the first place
