Wrong Oil type in car

    Hi
Bought oil at a garage few months back for 1998 1.3L Fiesta. The guy looked in his booklet and advised I needed 5w/40 oil. After doing a bit of googling now the recommended seems to be 5w/30.
Can I now start using 5w/30 or would the oil have to be replaced before using a different type?
    Thanks.

Luckily my car uses no oil between changes , but to answer your query I would have no problem mixing any oil grades as long as they are both mineral or semi-synththetic types. Dont mix these types and it'll be fine.

Did you buy this oil to top up or was it a complete change OP?

Was a top-up, car was running dangerously low, didn't realise how quickly old Fiestas go through oil.

If it's going through oil that quick I wouldn't be too worried about what oil is used

It's going to be fine. The old 1.3 is as tough as old boots and will easily tolerate the 5w40 (it's mixed at this stage with the other oil) and it's probably in the manual as an alternative oil.

I'd use what ford recommend as their standard though when changing it at the next service (believe it's 5w30)
