According to the website this is now capped at 200. No additional places allowed. Big time bummer.

That's a real shame. It would be interesting to see what the breakdown is of R/H/W.

I've heard there are 70 runners.

    70 runners? That's a lot more than I expected.

    Doing it yourself Enduro?

Ditto on the 70. Pleasantly surprised!

I'd hope to get there alright. But I've a lot going on leading up to it, so I don't think I'll be in the best shape for it this year.

    Hi All,

    70 runners, excellent!

Might try give this a recce next weekend. Need to get some maps, East-West mapping's Dublin mountains and Wicklow Mountains West will cover whole of route right?

I think 2 maps covers 95% of it, there is slight underlap on the 2 EW maps that I have that requires a 3rd map.

The top of East-West Wicklow Mountains West has Kippure Lodge and the bottom has Glenmalure.

I don't think we'll need a map for anywhere further north than Kippure Lodge, as long as you can navigate the roads from Ballysmuttan to Ballynultagh by memory. That's my plan anyway.

Also, there are 3, maybe 4 of us running a 1-way route from Ballynultagh Gap to Ballinagee Bridge tonight at 8.30pm. Unfortunately our cars are full, but if anyone wants to come with us, all you need is to get yourself to Ballynultagh Gap and organise a lift back there from Ballinagee Bridge.

That's exactly what I usually recommend!

Recce postponed. I hope nobody else turns up waiting for us!

I have no plans on doing a recce without a map and compass, along with a preloaded route on my Garmin 305 for backup. But how do I mitigate against the risk of getting lost up the mountains?

For example, my plan for tonight was to run a one-way route and get picked up at Ballinagee. Is there any benefit in putting a .gpx file of my planned route on a memory stick and giving that to the person who was expecting me?

I'm sure other AONers have read this rescue story from last year.

A GPS track can't hurt, but what you really want to leave is a written Route Plan, with a list of Grid Refs of your waypoints, along with notes about how you plan to get to each one, roughly when you expect to get to them, and what your emergency plan is if you have to scrap the recce along each part of the route. Include your name, age, phone number, any medical issues and the colour of your jackets.

It doesn't have to be a novel, just a quick run down so that if anyone has to go looking for your corpse, they'll know where to look first and what to look for.

    1. Map out the route on www.gpsies.com or else find a pre-mapped route.
    2. In the 'Track as' dropdown, chose 'Garmin CRS' and download the file to your desktop.
    3. Fire up Garmin Training Center, chose 'File' > 'Import' > 'Courses'.
    4. Click on imported course in left-hand tree, and press the 'Send to Device' button on the menu bar.
    5. On the Garmin 305 menu, go to 'Training' > 'Courses' > choose the course > 'Do course'.
Use the top two right-hand buttons to zoom.

I don't know exactly what the route is going to be in 2013, but if it's the same as last year then the files below indicate the gps route covered by walkers (includes Art's plaque and Cross) from CP1 at Kilbride Army Camp to the finish at Baravore. There's also a file indicating the route through the fields shortly after leaving CP1.

Note especially the profile (distance, ascent, etc.) of the route as furnished by my gps from Dublin Castle to the finish at Baravore.

    Hi All,

In relation to the required Kit, is says it's mandatory but is it really mandatory? I have, or is soon to have pretty much everything bar the Down Jacket and waterproof bottoms.

I'll have an option of two base layers, fleece and long sleeve thermal along with a outer waterproof shell.

I wasn't too sure what a down jacket even was until I clicked on the link, they seem a little excessive, expensive and take up a lot of room.

    What do people think?

Do I need everything at the start line or can I travel light for the first 25km to CP1 and then have most of my gear there ready for the mountain? Is kit inspection done before drop bag goes to CP1?

The down jacket is an option, the waterproof bottoms are mandatory and I would highly recommend them.

You can check in a bag and pick it up at CP1 with the kit you need\want for the mountains.

    Down jacket isn't mandatory.

It’s only items with an asterix beside them.

The waterproof bottoms are mandatory though. I bought them in 2011 for Art and they’re my favourite bit of gear. They pack up small, weight v little and given we live in Ireland, always great to have to hand.

Fairly sure you’re allowed bring less gear with you on the road section but will need to double check. What was possible then, was to have to two bags. One bag for the road, and then simply change bags (and shoes) at first checkpoint.

I was wondering about the down jacket myself yesterday, didn't notice Asterisk, or even Obelix, indicating it was optional. I picked up a new pair of waterproof trousers from 53 Degrees North in their 20% off sale yesterday.

I trailed my cheap regatta ones on the recce the other day in the rain and while they're grand for running in, they have one big failing. As they are just water proof overs there's two big holes in the top to allow access to your pockets of your trousers beneath. In heavy rain water runs down your jacket, straight into these holes and down your legs so they're a no-no.

I can understand the need for several items of clothing. After the run to the first CP I would be fairly sweaty anyway and combined with a cold night/morning and cooling down due to a reduction in pace you'd get cold fairly quickly so a change of gear would be welcome at that stage.

I got a pair of Berghaus Paclite waterproof bottoms last night in Snow & Rock, Dundrum (for a good bit cheaper than the Berghaus website, mind you!). They roll up to about the size of my fist and weigh less than a mobile phone. Will be trying them out tonight.

They're the ones I have. Brilliant gear. On my second pair after I lost my first a few months ago.

Ah didn't notice the Obelix's. Good, I'll pick up a pair of waterproof trousers so and I can do without the down jacket from personal experiences.

    Looking forward to it!

I was eyeing up those paclite ones but being a cheapskate went for these ones
    http://store.berghaus.com/p/hill-walking/mens-deluge-overtrousers/432907

Not as packable as your ones but I reckon with a bit of effort I can get them down into the little bag I have from my other ones. Not as good as the gore-tex ones but the reviews are decent.

It's a good idea to go out in different weather conditions, inclement or not, as the weather on the night itself may be bad. It will give you a chance to test your gear/clothing as well. Best of luck.
