There was a Nintendo Direct today(14thNov) detailing USB storage options,
it's only available in Japanese at the moment. Here's the video for all of you fluent in Japanese;).

Here are some of the details,I obtained from another forum.....
    Parental Controls

    - Nintendo realizes that some parents may fear that their children may use the Wii U's internet functionality without permission. Wii U has Parental Controls.
    - Can restrict content based on user age, CERO (Japan ESRB) rating, internet functionality, internet browser, e-Shop spending, Miiverse functionality, friend registrations, videos, data management, internet settings
    - Wii U keyboard input can save user input habits and predictive input in a specific database that depends on the game and user. Wii U does not save input data that you don't want other users to know into the database.
    - Miiverse settings can be turned on/off depending on the save profiles per game.

    USB Data Storage

    - 8GB = 7.2GB, 32GB = 29GB in terms of actual save data. Wii U uses around 4.2GB when using the system for the first time.
    - NSMBU is ~2GB, Nintendo Land is ~3.2GB. So, both won't fit into the Basic set at the same time.
    - Wii U lets you put data onto a connected USB media drive.
    - One USB drive at a time only.
    - Cannot disconnect the external drive while plugged into the Wii U and receiving power.
    - You can use general drives.
    - Nintendo cannot guarantee that small hard disks (bus-powered) that require more power than USB 2.0 can handle will work properly.
    - Generally, hard disks that have Y-Cables (2 USB connectors) will work with the Wii U.
    - Nintendo warns that for USB flash drives, even though the Wii U will detect and connect them as it would a hard disk, due to limitations on the number of times data is read from the disk and how this will eventually wear the USB flash drive down, Nintendo does NOT recommend leaving important save and other game data on a USB flash drive for long periods of time. How this plays out depends on the game, of course.
    - Wii U will read up to 2TB only for external hard drives even if hard drive has more space.
    - In Data Management, you must format the connected media drive. Note that this means you cannot use the drive with a PC.
    - You can move data from internal Wii U storage to external USB media in Data Management and vice versa. Data on both internal and external media will appear in the menu.
    - At launch, only 1 USB hard drive can be connected, but through a future update, more than 1 will be possible and you will be able to move data between them freely.
    - SD Cards can hold PC data, Wii Virtual Console, Wii Ware, and Wii save data, but cannot be used to save Wii U game save data.

    Backwards Compatibility

    - Wii games, Virtual Console, Wii Ware stuff cannot be played using the GamePad screen, but only on the TV in Wii Mode
    - Iwata: "We understand that there are people who were looking forward to playing Wii games, Virtual Console games, and so forth on the GamePad, but unfortunately we cannot accommodate those users' expectations."
    - There are plans for a Wii U Virtual Console that WILL be compatible with the Wii U GamePad. Please look forward to it in the future.

    Nintendo Network Premium

    - For Premium Set buyers only
    - Point service
    - Make Nintendo Network ID, then login to find and use the service
    - After logging in, you can see the points you have earned
    - Buy with download card or download number
    - Earn 10% back on purchases
    - Earn back purchase points in ¥500 increments
    - Points earned can be used with Wii U/3DS e-Shop, Wii Shopping Channel, DSi Shop

I'm sure there will be more details(in English) soon.

I remember the reason given for the hard drive size. Reggie said instead of Nintendo including the drive, they decided to leave it up to the buyer to decide what type and size of drive they want and they can choose what price to pay for it in the process. Rather than Nintendo charging an extra 100 for 500GB console when you can get external drives for half that.

Have a couple of 1 TB drives, that I use for back ups. Might by a new 2 TB or 3 TB drive for back ups, and use one of the 1 TB drives for the Wii U. Looks like we will need an external drive, for all the dlc etc.

Do we know yet if we can re download stuff off the Nintendo eShop again, if say for example a external hd failed?

surely it would be the same as the wii and anything purchased by your account can be redownloaded as many times as you want same goes for the 3DS

What sort of price difference are looking at for the Nintendoland and Zombie U packages?
Was aiming for the Nintendoland one with new Super Mario Bros but then considering going digital for certain titles...and if i want Nintendoland to be one of those, well choosing that package won't help! :P
First world problems, i know...don't really care about the Pro controller.
And Zombi U might be a tad deeper of an experience...

There's just something about having all my titles installed and available at any time which is appealing...

Not looking too good on the money side of things so probably just gonna be the two titles at launch for me, still gotta get through most of Skyward Sword though! And my small WiiWare/Virtual Console backlog.
Coupled with 1 or 2 eShop titles (better be some available at launch) hopefully that'll be enough - pity there's no Wii U Virtual Console until later :(

Hey guys. Can anyone help me out to exactly how the wii-u works? I tried searching google but cant get the answers.
Long story short. Looking to watch netflix in bed. Was originally considering buying a tablet. A nice small device to watch what I want, then sleep. Then I heard about the Wii-U months ago and got curious would the Wii-U be better than buying a tablet (as it also doubles as a games console)

So the question I ask is ... Could I place the wii-U console in my sitting room, then take the wii u tablet/pad and go and watch netflix in another room?
Or I guess a more easier question is does the wii-u stream applications to its tablet/pad :P

    it's about a 30 foot range.
netflix showed their wii u application a year or two ago, and it does allow watching your show on the upad.

www.youtube.com/user/nintendodirectch new nintendo direct about how usb and the storage will work.
sd cards are pretty much useless.
    -edit I were late.

Most shops are charging between 30 and 40 extra for the ZombiU edition.

It wasn't too clear but maybe you could use the SD Cards for DLC and patches? which could be handy if playing games off disk rather than digitally. And Wiiware and VC games like with the Wii?

I believe that these would have to be loaded from the hard disk also, and they would constitute/alter the game data.

    Quick question...

The only differnce between the Premuim Edition and the Zombii U edition is the fact that the former comes with Nintendo Land and a Nintendo Network premium membership, while the latter comes with Zombii U and is more expensive?

Zombii U one comes with the pro controller, and it also has the Premium Nintendo Network.

What we'd said BUT Nintendoland doesn't come in the ZOMBI u package

seems that the controller can be used to use as a universal remote control for set top box and tv

Apologies if answered elsewhere in the thread but are their any details of what media files the Wii U will be able to play? i.e will we be able to have movies on a hard disk and play them through the machine?

AFAIK there has been no mention of being able to play back movies from hard disk.
