Knocking on the bonnet of your car before you get in could save a cats life

With the weather getting colder I just wanted to let people know that some cats/kittens will seek shelter and warmth in car engines. By doing something as simple as giving a knock on the bonnet of your car you could save a cats life, as it will give them time to get out of the engine. If people aren't interested in the welfare of the animal just think about the expensive damage that could be done to your engine if a cat that is injured or killed in there.

Its a simple thing to do. We found a cat yesterday that was caked in engine oil and missing from the far side of the town. Luckily he hadn't been injured and we found his owners so he his safe at home now.

Can people please not turn this into a cat hate thread or derail it for their own entertainment.

Can they not use public transport like everyone else?

Surely when you close the car door it's the same thing?
    Pesky cats. Hate them!

I never 'get in' to the bonnet of my car, especially if it's packed to the gunnels with cats.

    I'd rather kill the cat

Ahem we have Liam to keep us warm :D On topic this happened to my brother. He went driving off and one of our cats was under the bonnet. Not a happy sight when he opened the bonnet to see the mangled remains of the cat.

Doesn't take much no matter how much you despise cats. Plus it saves the possibility of them fvcking your engine right up.

    That's a stupid post.
How do you think a cat is going to damage your engine.
I once saw a cat caught in a fan belt of a van starting. Screech, blood, bits of cat but the engine was fine. Really, an engine is far more powerful and robust than that.

I always check my car engine bay before driving away from my parents' house. Flipping cats everywhere. Came out of the house once to find 6 of them sunning themselves on the roof of the car.

The parents currently have a real mean moggy - evil incarnate - my Dad joked that if the cat was in the engine, the engine would lose.

    true story
my brother started getting a weird smell in his car .seemed to be coming from the aircon ,thought it was stale water in the system .tried everything but the smell was that bad his kids refused to travel in the car
he was going on holiday so brought the car to his mecanic ,the guy put the car up on the hoist and was taking off the undershield when he noticed something lying in it .
he got a bar to dislodge what he thought was a sod of grass and down onto his head came a ton of maggotts .
poor fella was puking on his knees .a bloody cat had got into the undershield and died

Cats doing damage to engines, don't talk to me about. Fúcker knew nothing about diesels engines and even wanted to know where to put the spark plugs  .

I have a dog that keeps cats away.
He despises them. So if a cat did manage to get past him & into the engine then I'd say his luck would protect him from getting mangled.

Also make sure to check the surface of your tyres for insects, if they're asleep on the top of the tyre they will get squished when you start moving. Please think of the spiders this winter.

    But spiders aren't insects.

    How about :

Cat owners, be aware that your pet may crawl up into someone's engine seeking heat and get killed, causing expensive damage to their car. Make sure you keep them in your house where it's warm, and the possibility of them getting shredded by a fan belt is practically nil.

My cat lost one of her legs because of this, didn't do any damage to the car AFAIK

I had the misfortune of killing three kittens in this manner. One got mangled in the alternator belt, one fell out on the road and one got baked when it fell in the exposed exhaust manifold.
