They say don't book it in until the car is roadworthy.

VRT not NCT, bit of a difference but why not as I would imagine that they are replaceable components where as a chassis is not and it is this that essentially owns the car registration details?

    Who said anything about NCT?

Booked in for a NCT but not for VRT, just turned up with details to the relevant tax office, car was also there for inspection as is sometimes the tax offices want and indeed perogative to inspect the car in case you are not declaring something.

Car must be complete and running to be registered.

You don't have something capable of being registered as it is not (without an engine or gearbox) a "mechanically propelled vehicle" which requires that it "is capable of achieving vehicle propulsion at the time of registration, to the satisfaction of the Commissioners".

If you can do that without an engine or gearbox, you're a better engineer than any of the motor manufacturers. As a side point, how could they even alculate the cc or CO2 based charges without an engine?

OK, so if I import a vehicle without engine, am I not supposed to VRT it within 28 days as normal?

No. It is not a vehicle as defined by the regulations.

Even more interestingly, you could import it with an engine but some level f defect which rendered it incapable of propulsion - you wouldn't be able to drive it (obviously).

Some would suggest that a spoiler-less Subaru could not be driven; perhaps one could be imported in that format and the VRT paid later.:D

You'll still be fined for the delay in registration regardless of whether it could have been registered or not at the time of import. It might be possible to sell it on to a hapless buyer for them to register but that scam is public knowledge now. Revenue and their agents in NCTS have a keen interest in the date of import and that date needs to be proven. If the car happened to wander onto a public road and happened to be seized (its not that unlikely) then the whole messy process gets messier.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I am looking at an S type jag 2.7D with a blown engine in the UK for under 2 grand. I would want an 04 onwards XJ or an S type to convert to an electric car in the future.

The VRT site isn't much help

    Electric Vehicles including Electric Motorcycles
Category A or Category B electric vehicles, which are shown to the satisfaction of the Revenue Commissioners to be series production (i.e, originally manufactured) models of electric vehicles registered during the period 1 January 2011 to 30 April 2011, are exempt from VRT. Such vehicles registered during the period 1 May 2011 to 31 December 2012, are eligible for relief up to a maximum amount of €5,000. Accordingly, for example, where VRT in the amount of 5,750 is payable on the registration of a qualifying electric vehicle, VRT in the amount of €750 (i.e. €5,750 minus €5,000) will be due at the time of vehicle registration.
Category A and B vehicles and motor-cycles which are shown to the satisfaction of the Revenue Commissioners to be series production models of electric vehicles and electric motorcycles are exempt from VRT until 31 December 2012.
