We have recently got approval for a self build from my council for a mortgage for a self build. We have a few people in our family and some friends too who can help us out at a reduced rate etc, and my partner will do much of the work also....so just wondering if the councils ask for confirmation that we have paid only people who are then paying their taxes? Or do they bother with that?

Because money will be tight we have a few people willing to really help us out so I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth!

No they don't, so you're o.k. on that front (i.e. the Council) but don't be surprised if the Revenue Commissioners turn up to check who is working on the site.

They're doing it a lot on self builds now, checking the commencement notices and visiting self build sites on-spec, checking details of who is working, etc.

It's one way of cutting out the jobs for cash cowboys.

So how would it work then if my father-in-law was to do some work for us for nothing? If the revenus commissioners turned up, could I prove that somehow he wasn't being paid for the job? Would it be better if this information was included in the QS information from the start and therefore in writing showing the agreement.

If this is not possible at all then is it possible to receive a present of work done by family members at all???

A simple page agreement outlining the details, signed and dated and lodged with your solicitor is how we are dealing with it.
