To get the Irish channels to appear in the EPG you must remove the aerial from the box then do a factory reset and let it do it's initial scan. Obviously it will find no channels.

When the scan is complete decline the option for a rescan. Reconnect your aerial the go to menu > channel search > manual channel search

Enter the frequency of your local saorview transmitter and scan. It should find the channels and store them starting at 800.

Then go back to menu > channel search > update channel lists and scan. This should find the freeview channels if you are in range of a freeview transmitter.

Let us know how you get on.

That's done it alright. Incredibly weak signal, though. I've spent heck knows how long on the roof spinning the aerial toward every mast I could think of, and I'm getting poor signal strength at the very best. I'm still not getting any of the Freeview channels either, which is the reason I bought it in the first place (I didn't realise most of the Saorview boxes could do the same job at the time).

Sounds junk to be honest. If I had something like that I'd take it back.

I have the ican working on NIMM and Clermont Carn, absolutely no problems. You must have the right software. I think there is someconfusion between this box and the Goodmans box, which is abysmal.

    Via a Sony Freeview HD

    CC Saorview: C/N, 32dB
    NIMM: C/N, 25dB

Currys at Sprucefield was packed with people buying Freeview HD and Saorview boxes.

Perhaps in moving the aerial about you could have damaged the cable or loosened a connection somewhere.

Thought that, but it was as bad before I went up there anyway. That's why I went up in the first place. I was really hoping to pull in the Freeview stations on this system, but I'm starting to think I need a new aerial altogether.

Like mrdtv2010 I am receiving Saorview from Clermont Carn and Freeview from Divis 5km north of Navan using the ican so unfortunately you may be correct about needing a new aerial.

I have one of these boxes but can't seem to get the BBC / ITV SD muxes! They just wont appear no matter how many times I scan / rescan. The signal is there but they don't populate the right LCNs. Everytime I retune I revert back to ITV3 on 10.

I'm going to send it back - but if you think I can correct the fault somehow I'd be grateful. Obviously no saorview here yet as Mt. Leinster is still low power on the bad Ch. 45 / 666Mhz frequency!

Got one of these for the in-laws and while updating the software before I brought it up to them I thought I'd try it on saorview.

First off an indoor aerial for maghera and where my play tv had 82% signal strength, no quality readings on them, it could only get 6% signal strength an obviously 0% quality. Upstairs off the loft aerial channels came in fine but that was on scart and the display issues meant I didn't bother with getting readings but might play more with it later.

Just wondering do the tuners in these need very strong signals.

Complete rescan with aerial out, then factory reset. I'll check the software version I have here in Belfast where I am on business and helping relatives. Just watching RTE on FreeviewHD Sony TV. Have Black Mountain, Clermont Carn and Carnmoney Hill RTE's amazing!

Go to Menu > Diagnostics > Signal Meter

Input the channel numer that you would expect to receive the BBCA mux on (for Divis it is C27). Check what C/N value you are getting. Mine is around 23 dB.

I am not sure if it matters but I took the aerial out first then did the factory reset. As part of the reset it does a complete scan when it starts up.

When the inital scan is complete go to Menu > Channel Search > Manual Channel Search and input the channel numer you would expect to receive the BBCA mux on.

    Details as follows:

    i-can EASY HD 2851T

    Installation menu is:

Channel Search with sub menus: Update, reinstall, manual
    Receiver upgrade
USB Upgrade (used to update the software)
    Factory reset
    Network configuration (IPTV)
Antenna power :should be set to OFF

    Under System Information tab

    Software Version: GBR_075 (2011-02-07)

This works with FreeviewHD, NIMM, and Saorview flawlessly as reported by another poster. The signal strength meter is not accurate on DVB-T2 and should be ignored.

Thanks for all your responses. I've double checked and tuned in exactly the way you have explained. I get all the channels in proper order but for some reason the ITV mux keeps telling me no signal, when I know it's not the case.

Going to try a different box to see if that makes a difference.

The fact that I can receive more than one Freeview TX couldn't be causing this issue could it?

Aha!You may need to set the regions carefully in this because the SI table may be getting confused. I sometimes get these no signal messages on changing channels but the receiver locks on and shows the programme straightaway. I assume you get Preseli and some repeaters. Are you getting Mount Leinster E23 now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭marclt

That must be the problem. Although, why it is only affecting C3/4 mux, I don't know.

Get Preseli, Haverfordwest and one or two of the Carmel muxes - but they aren't that strong.

Mt. L has been fine here last night but it has now totally disappeared. Need to unhook the VHF aerial for a bit.

I would use the manual tuning option on that box.Its always a good idea with multiple transmitters. Soon the VHF antenna can be binned.

Thanks million for that advice, several colleagues of mine bought this STB in Maplins Dundalk and had similar problems when retuning after Wednesday. AFAIK all seem to be OK now. Was wondering though why a factory reset and retune didn't work, anyway thanks again:)

Does this box seriously only offer 5.1 surround via toslink and not over HDMI?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,213 ✭✭✭culabula

PS -if it does, it doesn't work. Homeland is currently going out in 5.1 on Channel 4 HD on Freesat, squat on Freeview HD on this i-Can either by optical or HDMI.

If you are on about the i-CAN STB, yes it does if used within range of a UK DTT transmitter.

Heads up for anybody looking for these...
None left in Maplins in dublin city centre, picked up the last one of these in Maplins Blanchardstown. 4 left in dundalk

Guy in store told me there had been a lot of returns, presume this is because it's being mis-sold/bought as freesat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 456 ✭✭brian_gall85

Getting like hens teeth online too made a nice little profit selling them to friends and family because they simply work and don't cost the earth.

Don't see why they're being returned unless people think they are freesat like you say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 456 ✭✭brian_gall85

Not a clue about physical shops but Richer Sounds had them on their site for £29.99 the other day. Play had them too but price was up.

Was hoping to use one of these with a Hdmi to dvi adaptor to get HD on my old hd compatible tv. Is there any sound connections (yellow, red etc.)

    I have a feeling it doesn't :(
