So. Watched the Country Music Association Awards last night.

Why has C&W such a bad rep?

To be honest, I'm not hearing a lot of difference between Rock and C&W these days, just a twang and the subject matter. Here's an example.

And that's my point. Why do so many people dismiss a whole genre out of hand?

If I asked you, what do you think of Johnny Cash, you'd probably say Legend.

    C&W. Dismissed in one word.

The Avett Brothers are the most 'country' sounding music I listen to.

I thought Jedward were jazz/rock fusion.

I like country music but after the outbreak of the line-dancing craze in the mid '90s I think we shouldn't play with fire. My face still aches from all the cringing.

Johnny Cash is class. I'm partial to a bit of Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris.

Garth Brooks on the other hand should have been thrown on a bonfire years ago.

He's not exactly done much recently other than sit in Vegas and collect his pension.

On the other hand, incredible voices like Carrie Underwood are now dominating the Country charts. Love this song for instance. One of the best female voices across any genre.

If I am honest the thing that put me off country and western for years was Irish country and western. It's almost completely stuck in mid 1970's grand ole oprey American country and western in terms of sound. The songs are mostly just Irish fellas singing in an American accent about things that could only happen in the fantasy America in their head or just 'cowboying up' everyday things . About ten years ago I got a lend of the Highway men's first album and some of the newer Johnny Cash stuff and I am a big fan of the outlaw country and western singers ever since. I suppose they are the real deal and sell it so much better.

Talking about Cash. I defy anyone to listen to this without getting goosebumps.
