Digital signal offshoot into HD tv

Hi all. I have upc digital tv in the house, but upstairs I only have a cable running out of the source into a tv upstairs ( ie, dont have a third upc box to put up there). It was an old tv, but we got a hdtv up there and now the 20 or so channels are very blurry (watchable, but blurry). I realise now that this is because sd to HD tv is gonna be bad.

Is there any solution to this other than paying for another upc box ? ( which im not going to do). Can i use an old dodgy box to somehow upscale the signal? Can I calibrate the tv settings some way? We're also using the tv as a monitor.

    Cheers for any help possible.
