Why is it all modern games make you mash a key or mouse button during a cut-scene?

Modern games? It's been around since Dragon's Lair, the whole game was built on it. But if you want to blame one game blame Shenmue.

I think, if done right, really enchances a game. Like, needing to press a button in the middle of a cut scene and you not expecting it, especially if it affects the outcome properly.
