This being the case there is no legitimate reason from withholding it from digital free to air customers.

Conspiracy theorists might wonder if RTE was under some pressure from manufacturers of Saorview Approved STBs to withdraw their WST teletext from RTE1 on Saorview, thereby leading to loss of Aertel on the vast majority of non-Saorview approved boxes.

That might be the case if there was one large manufacturer. Truth is Vestel are the mass producer of boxes especially to the UK market. Irish sales would not be significant. The money Vestel spent in getting their own boxes Saorview certified (2 box designs) for rebadging is well paid for.

It is has been rumoured in trade circles (from what i hear) that there haven't been enough approved boxes to go around for ASO. Thankfully for those in ASO/DSO camps, retailers have made their jobs easy by providing alternative boxes that at least pick up the stations.

There is no reason for switching off the small EBU data on the mux, other than stubbornness.

I'd say RTE were just under pressure from themselves, to try justify the time and effort wasted on the MHEG5 teletext, not forgetting the fact that they can now have more graphical banner ads, which may be worth more? Add in a desire to copy the BBC.

Wife religiously watches aertel every morning but I've been unable to connect to aertel on my saorview tv no matter what butons I press on remote. Reception is perfect otherwise. Its a four year old Sony 52 KDL 4500 which I imported from the UK(would that be the issue ?) .We had no problem viewing aertel on analogue on this tv . Any ideas?

Are you using a Saorview box? If so have you tried pressing the red button on the remote for the box NOT the tv remote?

Which flavour of Aertel have you been seeing up to now, the old traditional version or the new Digital Aertel? Anything on TV3/TG4?

Thanks for the fast replies. I'm not using a box as tv is saorview ready. It was the old text and nothing on TG4 /TV3 either.

Have you retuned the TV recently, what country was used during setup?

My early 2008 Sony V4500 is still displaying "analogue" text on RTÉ1, TV3,TG4.

Well since the tv is 4 years old I would think it's unlikely to be fully Saorview compatible hence why you can't get Aetel or whatever the new digital equivalent is. Aertel in the form you know it could already be gone (or will be soon) just like Ceefax.

(note - I'm open to correction on any of this!)

TV3 and TG4 will continue with the traditional text service after RTÉ switches off theirs (still there at the moment).

My 2008 Sony TV will display Digital Aertel if I use UK as the setup country.

No text is or ever was analogue. The correct name is world standard teletext.

I've had another go at the setup but no luck.I think that there must be some slight difference in my tv's internal Saorview ability as it's a made for the UK market . I'll just move my Ariva box( which I rarely use) down to the living room, connect it to the tv and my wife can see Aertel with that(I hope). Thanks again for the replies.

Shouldn't make any difference, have you done a factory reset and try again with both Ireland and UK as the setup countries.

It could be down to a software revision. Maybe there are software updates for that TV, though I'd say they'd be hard to get now. Not even sure if it'd be that easy to update system software.

Aertel text still working on an LG LH2000 series TV. Not gone yet. Saorview should leave it on.

The problem is solved and relieved wife is back in business with Aertel. I was considering all your suggestions last night and did as The Cush suggested and defaulted the setup to factory settings and entered Ireland firstly and then UK as country of origin but still no joy. I suddenly had a memory jolt and realised that I misinformed you by stating that it was a UK tv. I did import a UK plasma about six years ago but the current Sony model was bought online from Pixmania four years ago and I became confused with the two. France suddenly came into my mind and once I entered that as country of origin the Aertel sprang into life.
Thanks ,once again, for all your suggestions and apologies for the confusion.

Well done. I have a V4500 and W4000 series Sony TV as well. Set mine to Portugal to get Aertel back. Couldn't get it with Ireland as setting. Originally had them both set to UK to get the MHEG5 text but lost that about 6 or 7 months ago. Choosing Portugal keeps the time on UK/Ireland in the EPG.

They announced that it was being switched off on Saorview (and UPC, though they've recanted on that one) yesterday. Surprised that they haven't gone through with it.

Another case of one RTE Dept not knowing what another dept are doing?

Anyway, I'd say it will go off soon. Better still, get rid of the MHEG5 text instead :)

Seems to have happened. No Aertel text on a W4000 and V4500 Sony TV today. Was working with country set to Portugal.

EDIT: gone on an LG too. They've pulled the plug alright.

Yep analogue Aertel gone alright. Disappeared off my Panasonic yesterday ( it has MPEG4, but I knew it didnt have MHEG5 ).Dont forget that anyone who has SKY, can still access it, but you will need to connect your SKY box by scart aswell as HDMI, as Aertel wont work via HDMI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,749 ✭✭✭✭looksee

I have read this thread and the links, but I am not clear what I should be doing. No aertel on RTE 1,2, etc. Kind of partial on RTE 3 and apparently full on 3e except that it is not showing today's news or weather - says there was 4 inches of snow in border regions! And that markets are responding positively to last night's bailout, even though the page says 29 Oct.

    Any suggestions, please?

For anyone with a satellite/DTT combo box which doesn't have MHEG5, as an alternative you can scan in the encrypted RTE One on satellite (10744, H, 22000), and you still access traditional Aertel on that channel.

 Ok, thank you! :) I'll give the tv man a call!

Splendid piece of info. I didn't realise that. I'll get on to it immediately and wife will again be able to access page 300 ( showbiz scandal etc.) in the morning with her first cuppa.:)
