RTE have said that analogue Aertel would continue on Sky and UPC after switch over to Saorview, so it should continue indefinitely. I would guess analogue Aertel won't be removed from Sky until they decide to replace it with the digital version.

@SAORVIEW why aren't TV3 on Saorsat? And will the new aertel be available on sky and UPC?

    Tommy & PJ‏@SAORVIEW
@festy_93 Digital Aertell will be available on UPC after ASO. Analogue Aertel will continue on SKY after ASO.

This from a Dáil question a 2 weeks ago

Digital Aertel on UPC Digital should go live in Nov but no plans for Sky to carry the service.

Analogue Aertel will continue for UPC analogue customers. Note the error in the last line of the reply where it says analogue teletext has not been available on Sky since RTÉ launched on Sky, typo I reckon.
    Tuesday, 16 October 2012

    392. Deputy Michael McCarthy
asked the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to incidences in County Donegal whereby RTE teletext is not available without a Saorview box, which is contrary to what is being communicated through public information adverts which state that a set-top box is not required if a household has access to SKY television or UPC; if he will clarify whether or not RTÉ Teletext is available without a Saorview box; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [44632/12]

Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (Deputy Pat Rabbitte): In relation to the availability of the Aertel teletext service, RTÉ must agree terms with individual network operators for retransmission of this service.

In relation to these services on UPC, I have been informed that RTÉ and UPC have agreed terms and are working together to make the Aertel teletext service available across all UPC digital customers. It is hoped the service will be ready to go live in November 2012.

In relation to UPC’s analogue customers (who are unaffected by the digital switchover), RTÉ will continue to make its analogue Aertel service available.

In relation to SKY, I have been informed by SKY Ireland that SKY has not carried the RTÉ teletext (analogue) service since RTÉ joined the platform in 2002. According to RTÉ, terms have not been agreed with SKY in regard of broadcast of Aertel Digital.

Thanks Apogee.I've also stored the encrypted RTE on my Ariva 120 in the bedroom. A good day's work overall.:)

I have read this thread and the links, but I am not clear what I should be doing. No aertel on RTE 1,2, etc. Kind of partial on RTE 3 and apparently full on 3e except that it is not showing today's news or weather - says there was 4 inches of snow in border regions! And that markets are responding positively to last night's bailout, even though the page says 29 Oct.

    Any suggestions, please?

Complain bitterly to RTE. There is no justification for turning it off as they still have to produce it for Sky viewers.

They might just turn it off on Sky then!

Analogue text services appear to have ceased on both RTE 1 and RTE 2 on Sarview (apart from subtitles)

    Still runniung on TG4, TV3, and 3e.

    Teletext will continue on TV3/TG4 - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=81089370&postcount=1

    Not true. You need MHEG-5.

Yeah, it's separate to MPEG-4. MPEG-4 is for video while MHEG-5 is for applications (of which Aertel is one of them).

    Shorthand codes
    • MP2, MP3 : codecs for Audio. Methods to reduce the data needed for the sound. AC3 (= DD), AAC and HE AAC are more Audio Codecs
    • MPEG, MPEG2, MPEG4: codecs for Video. Methods to reduce the data needed for Moving pictures as
    • JPEG: a codec for Photos. Methods to reduce data needed for natural source Still Images.
    • MPEG2 PS: A method to encapsulate video, audio and other data in a File. More versatile than AVI (which is also just a container). Can use wide range of Codecs.
    • MPEG2 TS: A method to carry multiple video, audio and other data in a Transmission. Can use wide range of Codecs.
    • DVD: An optical disc using MPEG2 PS format in VOB files. The Video is MPEG or MPEG2, MPEG4 isn't defined)
    • BD: A higher capacity disc using MPEG4 Codecs
    • DVB: A transmission carrying MPEG2 TS (the video can be MPEG2 or MPEG4 in a much wider range of resolutions than DVD or BD)
    • MHEG5: Nothing to do with Video or Audio. A multimedia Programming language and run time "Engine" for the Applications. A TV equivalent to Java and JVM (or Davik). The near defunct "MHP" is actually Java based. hbbTV is another related system orientated for Internet data & Video on TV.

I dont see the point to this "Digital" aertel. Why not just keep the old one?

Well as I still have no aertel, I'm off to: scan in the encrypted RTE One on satellite (10744, H, 22000), and you still access traditional Aertel on that channel.
I have no idea how to do this and don't expect to succeed, so might be back soon begging for advice

if i was to cancel my ROI sky supscription would i still get the rte, Tv3 channels etc since these are now considered 'free to air' in ROI? (in the north if you cancel your sky subscription you still get the free to air channels)
any other posters know what the score is on this?

No. Only the FTA UK channels are available. RTE etc are FTV meaning you require a valid subscription card with Sky.

Get a Combo box and you can get Saorview off aerial and the UK channels off the same satellite cable......... for free.

Sky boxes are fairly limited without subscription.

Yes this works on RTE1 and RTE2 encrypted channels on Astra 28.2. Whilst your box will say the channel is encrypted, the text service is not encrypted and works fine. No aertel/text on RTE2HD or Tv3 on 28.2.

If one doesn't want the sound of silence whilst using Aertel this way, on some FTA satellite receivers it may be possible to change the Audio PID to one of RTE's 4 main radio services (eg RTE Radio 1 = 2318, 2FM = 2319, RnaG=2320, Lyric=2321 ) as they are on the same transponder.
On a Lidl 'camping' Comag SL65/12 satellite receiver I used, it is possible to edit the Audio PID (APID) like so, and will store it.

It works with a Strong FTA receiver. I did a PID search using the VPID of RTE One (2306) and the APID of Radio 1 (2318). Now have Aertel with Radio 1 in the background.

    Genius Antenna!

Spoke too soon! Doesn't work.:(. Stored in the extra channel using above method. I changed channel on the receiver from encrypted RTE ONE (text working) to the PID stored new channel. Text was apparently working but the clock was frozen.

Flicked TV to a terrestrial channel then back to AV input to which the satellite receiver was connected too. No text on channel found with PID search.

Still a good idea though. Might work with other types of FTA receiver?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭Apogee

@Mr Cumulonimbus - rather than doing a PID search, can you edit the existing RTÉ One channel and change the audio PID to 2318, leaving everything else intact?

The frozen clock may be due to an incorrect or missing PCR PID.

No way to edit an existing channel it seems. Model number of Strong receiver is 4012.

    Hadn't entered PCR PID originally.

On encrypted RTE One, PCR PID is 2305.

    Using PID search again, I put in VPID - 2306, APID - 2318, PCR PID - 2305.
    Still didn't work.

I have also been fiddling around with this on the Ariva 120. Using the Ariva Editor I inserted 2 new channels on the Astra 10744 TP for Aertel on RTE1 & RTE2.

    For RTE1 I entered,
    Service ID:9601
    Video PID: 2306
    PCR PID: 2305

    For RTE2 I Entered,
    Service ID: 9602
    Video PID: 2309
    PCR PID: 2305

    I also entered 2 Audio PID's for both channels for Radio 1 (2318) & 2FM (2319).

I have got the same results NO TEXT on new channels I created and when i use the text function on the TV instead of the STB, I also get the frozen clock and very unresponsive text. EG: Getting the Soccer text on page 220 but it wont load.

So I'm afraid it don't look as it possible this way (So Far Anyways).
We will just have to use our STB Text function on the Encrypted RTE's with no background sound!:(

I also tested this with an Ariva 120 but by editing the existing channels in a dumpfile with the editor rather than trying to create new one, and the main problem seems to be the receiver autoupdates the PIDs.

So if you take RTÉ One APID (2307) and replace with the APID for Radio 1 (2318), when you upload the new dumpfile, the receiver overwrites the APID again with 2307.

You can stop the autoupdating by using a false Service ID. So change the RTÉ One SID from 9601 to 9999 and change the APID to 2318 and when you upload now, you can get Radio 1 audio on RTÉ One. But when you try to access Teletext, you get an error of 'Missing Data'. This is because when you use the false SID, the receiver can't find the Teletext PID. If you had a better channel editor which allowed you to set the Teletext PID manually, then it would sort this problem.

Just to confirm the above was working as outlined, I did a similar test on BBC 1 Scotland, where I used a false SID to stop autoupdating, and I was able to view the BBC 1 Scotland picture but with the BBCR5 Extra audio.

    Good trick.
Used method on 120 to merge radio1 & radio1extra audio to TG4 picture. No epg data available. Useful for Rugby/GAA if audio & video are not too much out of sync.

Thanks for the info, I really missed Aertel with my morning cuppa. My 5 year old Toshiba TV cant seem to pick up the new digital text, even though it picks up Saorview perfectly.

I now have Aertel through the scrambled Astra channel on my Ariva 150 combo.
Bit disappointed though that the Ariva can't display digital text as i only bought it this year

    (1) Only the 'old style' (EBU/WST) teletext is generally in use on FTA digital TV in mainland Europe
    (2) There is very little demand for combo boxes in the UK (which has MHEG5 teletext). If there was a big demand for combos in the UK the situation might have been different.

Thanks for that Antenna. It's no big deal, only really got the Ariva for the free HD channels anyway, I'm quite happy to use the old aertel for the life of the Toshiba TV.

Probably belongs on a different thread, but are there German or French channels on the satellite that the Sky channels are on, and if so how can I get them on my Ariva combo box?

no such channels, but on Euronews you can select audio soundtracks of other languages including French and German.
Also 'Renault TV' often has French output with English subtitles.

Incidentally, if you tune in the encrypted TV5 you can read its teletext (in French) too.
