I think you are not facing the facts if you think the bad performance today was based on poor goal keeping- far from it. Yes he didnt deal with the shot well and gave the the opportunity for Holt to strike it in but I recall a number of panic back passes by his defenders that he dealt with reasonably well, most crucially I saw Verm and Santos mess up a few times by loosing possession needlessly and we could have conceded more than a goal like you said.

The summary is that even if he had comfortably saved the shot, we wont have scored anyway.

Maybe but we wouldn't have lost.
I'm really peed off to be honest after that rubbish today. I thought they'd have got a rollicking at half-time but it didn't improve one jot in the second half. Can't remember Ruddy having to make a decent save.

Gervinho only really works well up top when the other team gives him space rather than parking the bus.

I actually think Giroud was one of the better players today. Few nice headers that almost lead to good chances.

At least we only conceded one goal, that's a good sign. 8 games without a clean sheet, where's that excellent Steve Bould defence?

In open play as a unit we are defending much much better than we have done for many seasons. Today not so much but in games gone by we have.

We are still terrible at set piece defending granted. It's where we leak goals constantly but that doesn't mean our defending has been poor overall and that Steve hasn't made a difference. It's just one part of defending we are bad at which we need to work on.

Just watched the highlights again we should have been beat 2 or 3 easily we were lucky
Only positive was gnarby getting a run and jack been that bit closer
Mannone was brutal for the goal but I don't expect much from a 3rd choice keeper I would nearly throw marteniz in cant be any worse
It's oblivious now you stop Santi then you stop us this is where we need jack back take some burden of Santi
Basically it was one of them days every team has them we just seem to have them more than most.
The only response I want is 3 wins, shalke, qpr and utd

Will we ever challenge for a title again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,205 ✭✭✭Gringo180

Poor performance yesterday devoid of any real steel and leadership.

Vermaelan was shocking again, hes been very poor for us all season dont know why Wenger gave him the captaincy he should of gave it to Mertesacker or Arteta.

Lads isn't it so frustrating being an Arsenal fan these days, promise so much at times but always always falter :(

I thought we would challenge this year but fade away into 3rd or 4th

Still think we will get 3rd or 4th and the gap will be closer than 19pts but we won't look as challengers

Ah ye're not that bad. Diaby being forever injured doesn't help you at all. Seems to be a lack of belief sometimes when things aren't going well.

I didnt get to see any of the game yesterday as I was at a wedding. Kinda glad I missed it now. Great to see that despite new players and a supposed new era, same old failings are still there. If the manager is blaming a lack of sharpness, he has to carry the can for that. His old motivational failings are still haunting him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,145 ✭✭✭purplepanda

The buck stops with the manager, his position is comfortable & he has too much power at the club.

As already mentioned it costs nothing to get the basics right, yet we seem to have trouble managing even that. And often we have trouble against recently promoted & hard working opposition with a game plan.

Too many deadwoods in the squad & complacency from the top down

Lots of support heading for Germany, some without tickets & the team owe them a good performance now!

i'd say the team will be laughing at them like everyone else will be, since arsenal are at home on wednesday

We really need to get our act together after the poor performance on Saturday. I have said many times that I don't mind if we lose as long as we give it our best shot but some players didn't seem to care too much on Sat and that is just not good enough. Wenger said he thought the performance was very bad but what did he do about it at half-time?

Ten points behind Chelsea is bad but for Arsenal 12 points out of a possible 24 is simply not good enough.

Since they are only 3 points behind us now it's a good job we beat Liverpool at the very start of September. Need to bounce back and re-group.

By the way Happy Birthday Arsene Wenger.

Our problems are going forward when Santi is quiet we don't create much did to change that and have more options hopefully jack will do that, but can't place that kinda burden on him after been out for so long

Missed the game the weekend and dont think Im gonna watch It on Arsenal player. From what I heard It was awful. QPR the weekend is a massive game now. 3 points and a good performance are a must.

Diaby can provide a good powerful driving attacking force from midfield which also gives Santi more freedom to do his stuff. We all know the problem with Diaby though :(

When Wilshere does start playing in midfield, he should have the same impact though. We don't want to be in a position where teams know if they stop Cazorla they stop Arsenal. Look at Chelsea with Mata, Hazard and Oscar all to provide creativity. if one has an off day or is being successfully contained, there is always someone else who can come up with the goods.

Beat Everton 2-1 away in the U21 match.

Jack played 90mins again and Arsenal.com reports he was heavily involved. Sagna played the full game as well. I wonder will Eisfield be given a chance by Wenger too, he's getting the same kind of plaudits in these games as Gnabry is.

Lets all join together and pray jack is as good as he was before injury:)
We need to go beat qpr and man united and hope chelsea start dropping points to hold any hope of a title this year!
I think walcott should be given a chance upfront cause giroud is not to my liking so far at all

This article is very worrying and sums up a major part of our problem --

I pointed it out during the game, several times we'd play half a dozen passes backwards in a row. Earlier in the season when I mentioned it as a problem around here I was told to shut up. To be honest I didn't even realise we had so much possession the other day because of just how little we did with it. While we were more comfortable and looked like we might be about to do something in the first 2 matches of the season we created very, very little in both of those matches.

I noticed that when Ramsey gets the ball he rarely gives the quick pass. He prefers to dally and either play it square or backwards which allows the opposition to get ahead of the ball and into defensive positions. Cazorla is the quickest to move the ball forward but the lack of movement by our players ahead of the ball led to far too many back passes on Saturday.
We are becoming easy to defend against.
I have fears for us on Wed against a very good Schalke team who disposed of Dortmund away at the weekend and whose confidence is sky high.

We've been easy to defend against for most of the season, 2 of our 3 league wins have been against teams trying to play above their level at the time as I pointed out. Have we beaten a team who've just tried to park the bus? We've been easy to defend against for about 5 years. Pass it to the edge of the box, there's no room for anyone to run into so pass it back and hope the opposition defence is stupid enough to drift out.
Ramsey just looks so slow on the ball and as I said at the time I haven't been glad to see the ball go to him in a long, long time.
We should be alright Wednesday as it shouldn't be an attack v defence match.

Has anyone any links for highlights of the u21 game? Anyone here a member of arsenal.com? £36 for the year, is it worth it?

Ramsey just can't be relied upon to be a creative force in the midfield yet, far to slow in possession, taking too many touches trying to look for the hollywood pass which is very rarely on. Looks like we will be relying heavily on Jack when he gets back, in terms of his tenacity and passion as well as his quality on the ball.

Walcott and Chamberlain will be losses now too, we just look a bit one paced(slow) without them.

Think eisfields size is holding him back he needs to bulk up a bit

Schalke will be a very tough game tomorrow.

Anyone feel the loss of Diaby has had a big impact on the team? I think his presence and drive in the middle of the park has been a factor in our flatness going forward.

Absolutely, his power and movement forward could have made a big difference. It looks like its something we should never begin to rely on though as he's always 1 game away from another injury.
