Canon macro shots on a budget (manual lens advice)?

Looking for some advice - I've been happily shooting away for a while now on my 40D and nifty fifty combo, but lately I've been itching to pick up another lens for macro and/or wider angle shooting.

As I'm tight on budget, ideally what I'm hoping for is a shorter length old manual lens (eg an M42) fitted via an adaptor to the 40D body.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what to look out for, focal length, f-stop etc? Would M42s be the best option or should I look at OMs? Or is there a decent cheap EF option?

    Thanks in advance...

If you are going to get the M42 lens, you're likely to need an adapter to fit your body
