They are raising the premiums for women, but they are not lowering men's insurance costs.
This is all you need to know,

    It's a money grab.

Rather than increase prices for women, they should meet halfway by reducing male premiums and increasing women's premiums but not to the extent that they are saying.

The insurer's are actually benefiting from their new "equality stance" rather than the consumer - they're making more money by claiming "equality" yet the original maths still stands as women are a lower risk but they are now being charged the same.

Women = low risk = low premium
Men = higher risk = higher premium

    Equality revision
women = low risk = higher premium
men = higher risk = higher premium

Claiming "equality" is actually a clever revenue generating model - the difference should be split between the two sexes

Shock horror, the Irish people still being F*cked over in a recession

I think we all consider it a shame that rates weren't adjusted so that they were even, to cover the balance already being paid to insurance companies instead of seeing it as a means to raise women's costs similar to men and getting themselves a nice big bonus from it.

It's another win for insurance companies here.

    -Its compulsory
-They make up their own rates
-They got a free boost to their women's rates

Seriously it's a business model that can't go wrong.

    ...unless your surname is Quinn.

It's all EU insurance companies and not just Irish. I got a letter from my financial advisor a few weeks back. Life- and health- insurance for men are going to increase considerably after Dec. 21st. I can expect a 20-25% rise in my health insurance premium so that I am on equal par with womens health insurance. Bloody joke, that works out at an extra €100 a month for me. F*ck these equal rights :(

I'm all for equality. Car insurance quotes should be dependant upon the safety record of the individual driver and not biased towards a gender.

Now, as for your question "how come the girls weren't fighting tooth and nail for this equality over the decades?" well, who the Hell fights to pay more for a service? The bias here is against men so perhaps men were too lazy to fight for their own equality in this area.

I would like to see the inequality evened up however I don't see why one group should pay more instead of the other group paying less.

"AS many as 200,000 women are facing motor insurance increases of up to €300-a-year, the Irish Independent has learned"

On the ball as usual are the independent.

This news is at least a year old if not more.

Because the risk to the insurer wasn't equal. From your own article:
Women have traditionally paid much less for insurance than men because they are less risky drivers.
They are raising the premiums for women, but they are not lowering men's insurance costs. This is because men are involved in a far greater number of serious and expensive accidents.

Anyway it seems to me that in this scenario, neither gender are benefiting, only the insurance companies.

The EU ruled on it a year ago but the change only comes into effect next year.

It's wasn't about fighting to "pay more" - the point is put to show that equality was not sought in that area as the bias that existed, suited women, which would be fine if those groups were merely "women's rights" groups, but that wasn't the case, as the OP is referring to those that defined themselves as Equality seeking organizations.
The bias here is against men so perhaps men were too lazy to fight for their own equality in this area.
Men weren't "too lazy", they argued against the bias for years but were usually just laughed at and accused of whinging. Male lobby groups never had the ear of politicians in the same way as our sexual counterparts.

Exactly. I think they should have lowered men's and raised women's to a mid level. The idea of Insurance is to spread the risk ......... but compulsory insurance (CAR) is a cash cow for the Insurance industry. Surely the Ombudsman should put the slide rule over this.

Insurance for women goes up adding extra expenditure to the family.
Calls OH to break it off.

Insurance companies are rival businesses, sooner or later they will reduce male premiums due to the extra revenue from the women so that they can out price each other. That is assuming they are not colluding on prices which is illegal.

Ahem! But that then will not be the homogenised version.

    About time too.

And all the women out there thinking, "ah feck that, why should we pay higher premiums when men are the risk factor.." B0!!ox to that.

I have 0% chance of getting pregnant, but still pay for your maternity leave.

It'll be really amusing if my insurance goes up because of this.

Because the feminist movement - what there is of it - isn't really about equality. That's why they call themselves feminists not equalitists.

    Ahem...women don't get pregnant on their own y'know. Men have a 50% stake in a pregnancy ;)

I'm sure many women would happily give up their maternity leave if the man could carry, deliver and breastfeed the baby instead!

A while back it was revealled that Irish car insurance companies were more proffitable than UK ones.

    And that wasn't per capita.

They were making more on the much smaller Irish market than the UK one.

Then again PMPA, ICI and Quinn have shown that there isn't much regulation in the Irish insurance market.

Because it has nothing to do with equality, it should be based on stats. Much like women paying more to purchase an annuity is fair and based on stats.

Now what we need for true equality is equality between the sexes in workplace deaths and suicide.

Because sexism against women is completely disallowed but sexism against men is ok and not really a problem. Positive sexism. What a wonderful world we live in.

Is there not an Ombudsman to sort out these inequalities?

    Remember 9/11 ?

In this part of the world (ROI/UK) the government pay out for terrorist damage

Our premiums went up despite ZERO risk.

Only a neanderthal cavewoman would believe that women should have cheaper car insurance.

Your suppression of us men based on our weaknesses is coming to an end, do you hear me, an end!!
