    Just completed Resident Evil 5.

Never got around to completing it when it first came out due it being utterly boring... but I preserved with it this time around!

Now I'm ready for RE6... although I still may wait a month until it's dirt cheap everywhere.

The only reason I want to play RE6 now is just to see if it's as bad as everyone says.

I think it's really just the Chris levels that are terrible. The Leon levels are supposed to be quite good. They've also said they'll be releasing a patch that will let you choose Ada from the get go, as currently you have to complete the other 3 campaigns of the game to unlock hers, and her one is supposed to be quite good too.

Well it depends, are they Fifa and Sonic R or Panzer Dragoon Saga and Radiant Silvergun? :p

If they're PAL games you've never heard of then they're definitely worth picking up. PAL Saturn can = rare and expensive more times than you'd think.

Well, you're nothing if not predictable! ;)

But, a lousy fps is Haze or Resistance, Doom 3 isn't so bad, just quite dated now.

I came across that a little while who while searching for RE 1.5 info. Imagine what the RE franchise could be now if they didn't redo 4 and go down the action route instead.

I'd like to hear his opinions on UTIII, quite possibly my fave FPS of this generation.

It's not bad actually, but some of the odder ones from the UK are just awesome.

I actually think it looks terrible. It really is Resi trying to take on Silent Hill and failing miserably. It looks fine but really imagine 8 hours of the same jump scares and none of the psychological horror of silent Hill. I can see totally why the whole project was scrapped for Resi 4 when Mikami came on board. Resi 4 turned out a hell of a lot better.

Yeah I think Resident Evil needed the radical reinvention it received (before promptly going down the ****ter big shtyle). Resident Evil 4 was a more innovative, exciting and brilliant sequel than any game adhering to the formula and style of the PS1 entries could have been. I think RE4 is getting an unfair bad rep recently because of what followed. But it was Mikami's departure that caused the series to lose direction, nothing more. I don't think moving backwards is necessarily the right step, although the current Capcom team don't really seem capable of moving forwards either. Frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing the franchise being put out of its misery at this stage. It has had a good run of it. The three PS1 games (and the GC remake) did a great job making the most out of the original formula, and Resi 4 got the new style right first time around. Any franchise would be lucky to have such a strong run of sequels.

Oh, started Dishonoured tonight. Absolutely fantastic. Well worth checking out if you want an old school Deus Ex / Thief style game, but with lots of fun innovations and a really clever, well-designed setting.

Resi 4 is an amazing game, but it ain't a Resident Evil game. And either are the ones which followed. Simple as really!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭DinoRex

Yeah. As much fun as I had with RE4 the whole time I was also disappointed with both the story and lack of puzzles.

I've started on RE6 now. The Leon campaign starts out super creepy and I loved it... the scary chunk is skipped completely in the demo.

The story in Resident Evil games have always being farcically convoluted and cheesy. The puzzles were in general often times no more advanced than 'open door with key or weird icon you found'. The opening siege of Resi 4 was scarier and more intense than anything I'd experienced in the series to that point (although I have never fully played through 2 and 3, only extended sections in friends houses).

Resident Evil: The PS1 Years are wonderful, but increasingly antiquated. They have their many charms, old-school scares and everything else they do well. But 4 is in the upper-echelon of game sequels, along with Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Street Fighter II etc... Free from traditional zombies, rigid movement and other standard survival horror tropes, it felt like what few sequels ever do: new and exciting. It's also much more loyal to the tone and (nonsensical) lore of the original games than its given credit for. The second that chainsaw started buzzing and I was soon after unexpectedly decapitated, I was a convert.

Shame the RE5 team didn't seem to understand what it was that made the previous game so good in the first place, but hey that's crappy new Capcom for you. It's also arguable that all the inferior imitators that have tried (and largely failed) to match RE4's brilliance have diluted its impact (and the way it repopularised the dreaded QTE is truly unfortunate). I don't think it takes away from the game itself, which is a case study in fantastic game design.

I won't argue that RE4 isn't a wonderfully crafted action game. But it's just not what I want from an Resident EVil game. I like being stuck in one location gradually opening more and more of it up.

RE2 is still my favorite of the series. I'll never forget how mind blowing it was when I went to play through it a second time and discovered it was a completely different game this time.

Then I really love the RE1 remake. The Lisa Trevor sections are probably some of the scariest moments in video game history.

I really enjoying 6 at the moment. So far it's playing just like the opening sections of RE2 where you're making your way across the zombie infested Racoon City. The graphics and atmosphere are brilliant. Currently working my way through the subway system and you can see the elongated shadows of zombies running for you cast against the the curved wall of the tunnel. It's a fantastic moment.

A huge amount of work has gone into crafting the game, it's a shame that it's getting the backlash that RE5 should have gotten. 5 just seemed to take everything that was bad about RE4 and stretched it out, it was completely devoid of atmosphere. But I owed it to myself to play though and complete it as I've completed all the other ones. (well, not Gaiden) And it was good to finally see a resolution to plot points that were raised in Code Veronica all those years ago.
