VW Passat, Power loss and white smoke

    Hi, My son has a VW passat 2003 1.9tdi...It has developed a problem(Power Loss and white Smoke) which,according to a friend,could be the Turbo,,I'm just wondering, could it be anything less severe and costly...It only happened last night so hav'nt had a chance to look at it yet....Could it be a broken hose?..something to do with fuel??....Would appreciate some advice here ie. What to look out for etc....Cheers

    Possibly fuel pump timing, or a sensor(need diagnostics for that). You could check the fuel pump drive belt for anything out of the ordinary.

    As George says, it would be a PD engine.

    White smoke could well be a failed turbo or possibly a head gasket issue.

    Hey Lads...Thanks for that....Assuming it is the Turbo thats gone...Would it have caused any damage to anything else when it went?...Is there anything else that needs to be checked when replacing the Turbo itself?...Thanks

    If it is the turbo and its blowing white smoke it means that its leaking from the turbine(exhaust) side so any leaking oil will only be making its way into the exhaust, as opposed to into the intercooler/throttle body etc if it was the compressor side, which would also be blowing blue smoke.

    If your coolant level hasn't dropped at all then that would rule out a head gasket failure as the cause.

    the ERG valve can get caked up with the burned carbon from the oil.
    Be worth taking it out and cleaning it with carb cleaner.

    while your at it check the intercooler hoses and if very oily clean it out and check for leaks.

    EGR/intercoolers etc getting oil contamination would only happen if the oil seals on the turbine side of the turbo where leaking which would also cause blue smoke, not white.

    Turbo seals can go at both sides and the colour is grey with a diesel not blue unlike a little oil leak in a petrol.
