List of world cities?

Hey, I think this is the best place to ask this! I need a list of world cities filterable by population. I'm aiming for approximately the top 200-300 cities in the world. Would anyone know of a convenient way of getting this data? Many thanks :)

Offhand for geographical information, there is the CIA World factbook.
As well, R modules have a number of geographical related packages - one of these?
