Just saw this on BBC news. Full story here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19555757
Nick Clegg retracts 'bigot' attack on gay marriage opponents

Nick Clegg has withdrawn comments about opponents of gay marriage in which he called them "bigots".

The deputy PM was expected to launch an attack on opponents of the policy - which include some Tory MPs - in a speech at a reception later.

But the wording of extracts released to the media has been changed.

Sources close to Mr Clegg said the "bigot" claim was "a mistake" in an early draft of the speech which should not have been released to the press.

But Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey said the remarks were "very offensive".

"If he persists in taking that view I and others would be very offended, he said.

"To be called a bigot is a very offensive statement and I would ask him to recall it...because there are issues here that demand very serious debate."

How does everyone feel about this? It might not be the most diplomatic thing to put in a speech but I'd have to agree with referring to the opposition views as a bit bigotted in this day and age. I don't really feel the uproar is justified tbh.

Correct thing to do.A racist doesn't like being called a racist, bigots don't like being called bigots and it's politics you've got to (unfortunately!) work with these people to reach a compromise.
[The reason why they kick up such a fuss about these remarks though is because they actually have no valid defence for their ignorant viewpoints so they'd much prefer use the smokescreen the blatant mud slinging offers them.]

I'd have loved if he stuck by the comment. To any criticisms, he could respond with 'Prove that you're not bigoted'. :D He seems like a rather uninvolved politician even though he's in the coalition(publicly anyway), why not take advantage of his position?

Agree. The Cleggmeister, who I inadvertently installed in his current role, is in just the right position to yap away with impunity. Cameron (who I even more annoyingly handed power to) can distance himself from it as an official party position.

I like how the archbishop is offended at being called a bigot, but does not actually contradict it. An unusual showing of honesty from a member of the clergy :pac:.

Pah. At least you had a choice. I live in Buckingham, which ios the seat of the speaker. There is a convention that dictates that none of the major parties will go against the speaker, so I have a choice of a number of single issue independents, the Monster Raving Loony Party or UKIP. Considering I am massively pro European, not a great choice.

I'd be furious if I were you. The Speaker isn't a political position so why do they hold a constituency? Maybe this position should be elected by parliament for a notional constituency?

Clegg should not be holding back - he should tell it like it is, otherwise he's just coming across as spineless.

Catholic university in the US lumps gay people in with murders, rapists and the mentally ill:

    Media report: http://www.npr.org/2012/09/10/160763549/college-course-lumps-homosexuality-rape-murder

DEVIANT BEHAVIOR focuses on the sociological theories of deviant behavior such as strain theory, differential association theory, labeling theory, and phenomenological theory. The behaviors that are primarily examined are murder, rape, robbery, prostitution, homosexuality, mental illness, and drug use. The course focuses on structural conditions in society that potentially play a role in influencing deviant behavior.

They may be coalition partner bigots, however, which would make things a bit 'difficult' politically.

Catholics preach that homosexuality is a deviant behaviour. Shock horror!

    Fair play to them.

You're back! Unfortunately I don't believe that bull**** claims through pseudoscience should be taught as fact in universities.......

    .......

It is. I'd have thought some of them would have categorised it as "friendship that crossed a boundary line". Evidently that doesn't apply between consenting adults.....

Don't ya know? People with mental illness should totally be lumped in with murderers and rapists and the like.

And based on his comments in another thread, Actor thinks that being gay leads to mental illness, so he probably agrees that having a mental illness is a deviant behaviour...

Why then do homosexuals suffer from depression and suicide much more frequently than the general population?

I'd steer well clear of bum "sex" tbqh.

Yeah, sure. It's quite evident from my experience on boards.ie, that not one homosexual person gives two tiddlywinks what I have to say about their behaviour.

Anyway, in my opinion; going against the grain of nature leads to all kinds of problems.

Homosexuality is prevalent in nature, but hey, don't let facts get in the way of your simple mindedness.

So are other deviant behaviours. Replication of nature is not a moral argument.

They're not interested in objectivity in there. They're obsessed with self-gratification and individuality.

I take it you don't fly, drive, use man-made buildings or receive any sort of operations (man was meant to die from appendicitis)

Because of years of being put down and abused and being told you were evil by cretins that were turning a blind eye to the real evil in their midst.
