Hi all. Scrapped the new forum. Got a message from someone with a knowledge of these things saying I would be absolutely crazy to take it on on my own. Wasn't AFR but someone who tried something on a local level before and got into some trouble with John Q. Law. So here I am.

Awful pity that Liam felt he had no option to close it down. I was hugely entertained by it from the time I joined eight years ago. Some all time great internet threads and posters on there. End of an era but maybe we can get something going on here.
Hi D2, welcome to boards, surprised you were not on here before, Perth here by the way.

Stuck with AFR. Wasn't really into posting on multiple forums for fear of losing the run of myself.

We'll see how it goes on here!

Its sad to see some of the fairly decent skins heading over to the scum on TFK. The same lads who ruined the site.

Will they be able to influence it for the better ?

Feel free to publish the name of the other site I suppose, I'll check with the bosses here how best to deal with issues like this.

A shame to see it go but it had gone downhill with all the bogus posters and the soccer threads turning farcical after the first page. Plus some new lads seemed to think they could post whatever they wanted. He definately seems to have alienated lads but at the end of the day it was his site and he'd have had to face the music. It needed proper moderation, simple as that.
It was a great source of information on the GAA - going to particularly miss it say after Christmas when IC teams are playing challenges and Walsh Cup or Waterford Crystal games and you'd get several of the lads going and posting up good reports on what happened.
As for TFK - it's like a gay bar half full of camp men bitching away thinking they can say whatever they like cos no one is going to hit them with a handbag.

TFK is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

That and a bunch of people whose teenage years are a distant memory for every part of their body bar their brains.

Hopefully a few more ex AFR lads will come over here.

If you know what you're looking for, it seems you can still search for individual threads.

For example, this infamous one which was the real start of the rot. http://www.anfearrua.com/topic.aspx?id=446920

Were you banned off there Sid or did you just leave.

There were some truly brilliant threads on there. The Cork Strike, Declan Lynch- Positively Seething in his hatred of the G.A.A. and the Limousin Cattle ones were superb.

I think plenty of the genuine GAA lads are crying out for a good site and if some agreement can be done regarding what is acceptable to post and what is not between everyone and the mods, then this can take up the mantel in some form, at least in GAA terms. Slating individual players, posting anything insulting about a player or hearsay on what they did on a night out is clearly not right. But nothing wrong with good healthy discussion as long as lads dont resort of what was going on at times on AFR and what seems to be common place on TFK. I certainly want a decent forum where the club GAA scene at home is discussed as well as whats going on behind the scenes with the IC teams and honest match discussion. This is the GAA section of this site and with good moderation, no reason why this cant be achieved.

One of the great things abouty AFR was the random stuff - such as the limousin cattle thread as D2 mentioned. They were generally not terribly frequent but they were classics in their own right - another one I'm thinking of is that all time classic post Hud put up once about stealing down in the middle of the night to steal a sweet out of a box. This is the GAA section of this forum which is huge in its etirety - AFR was a one stop shop for everything from GAA to music to random stuff to other sports and current affairs. This forum is huge in comparison - and the moderation is serious from what I can see which is fair enough, they have to do it that way.

Howdy lads. Ex AFR also and posting under the same username as I did there. Sent a quick email to the old bossman and he was gracious enough to reply. We did have some great threads over there. The only downfall (for me anyway) was the increasingly large # of wummers of late, we all have our moments having a bit of a slag but this was too much. But some great years none the less. Liam did mention a while back he was having health issues and I sincerely wish him the very best.
Hey D2, were you at the minor game on Sunday?

Well lads, another AFR refugee. Used read it for a long time before I started posting halfway regularly. Will definitely miss the place, as someone said above I've tried boards but it's just huge compared to what AFR was.

The site had gone down hill a lot in recent times. I couldn't understand how genuine posters often got banned for seemingly innocuous things but some WUMs would be let run and run, Projx and Bressie and a few others should have been nipped in the bud early on and they ended up ruining the forum. Another group of posters such as rebelcounty30 amassed massive numbers of posts despite having nothing but pure sh*te to contribute.

Anyway, going to check out here, TFK and HoganStand for a new home, is it alright with the moderators to discuss which might be a good replacement??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 312 ✭✭grimbergen

AFR was a joke. Used to make me laugh the way the owner used to insult the users while at the same time asking for cooperation in running the place! It was obvious that money was the main motivation behind it as site traffic was paramount - there was no other reason why a GAA discussion forum would allow multiple aliases to post on victoria beckham's latest hairstyle. Have always liked the moderation over here so looking forward to some good discussion.

Not to mention that arse posing as a Unionist!

Would have been so simple to just close all the genuinely stupid threads as soon as they were started, instead a lot of genuine posters got banned.

It seemed to go into meltdown in the final days. I got banned (I agreed with a guy saying there should be more than one AIF thread allowed while other eejits could post multiple threads about man city, not even strongly worded). Then I checked in later and there were multiple threads asking what was going on with the site and why were threads being closed; then checked in later again and Liam had taken the nuclear option.

Thought it was strange the way it happened in the end, especially after the recent update to the site. Stress must have gotten to him.

ah the banter is getting good here already. I wonder will Bressie or ProjX make an appearance?

I hope we get more of the lads onboard here. I have no idea where most posters would want to call home again? Carryharry, Yankee, Labane, MM, Blanco, Faldo to name but a few.

For me as an ex-pat I try to keep up with the going's on as best I can but I did enjoy some of the other sports threads as well. (Though we did have way too many soccer threads!!).

I suppose all good things come to an end but sure life goes on!

The random threads being alongside the GAA threads was good alright. Was it Shackleton that was absconding- that was a good thread & obviously some classics mentioned above.

This place is like going in to town on a night out with AFR being more like a local pub. There is a lot more going on here, more topics, more posters & there is even bouncers here. Everyone likes to give out about bouncers from time to time but in fairness they stop alot of messing. If AFR had a few more it would have prevented alot of the crap there.

Anyway best of luck to the owner, it seems he put a few quid in to it in fairness to him.

good to see you here The Badger/Trimmer

Had a look at TFK, absolute mad house, sad to see AFR lads even entertaining that rubbish.
The AFR site seems to have the threads back up now
