Minimum number of hotel rooms...

We've found a really nice venue but one of the conditions is a certain number of hotel rooms will need to be booked. Is this something people haggle over? I'm sure parents/siblings/close friends will want to stay and we'll probably cover the minimum, but on the off chance we dont is this a big deal? We'll probably cover some people's rooms anyway, but it really adds up if we end up covering empty rooms!

Is it a normal hotel or a house/posh estate type place where you'd want the run of the place for your wedding?

How many rooms are the minimum?

It all depends on how many you are inviting, how far the majority are away from home (if it's a 15 minute drive people may be more likely to go home and not stay).

If you agree with them that you will fill x amount of rooms and you don't then you will have to pay for them yourselves.

It sounds like they're pre-empting what you're going to haggle. If it wasn't in the equation would you be haggling anything else? Whereas if you haggle this condition away or down by half it makes it seem like you've gotten yourself a bargain. I wouldn't be pleased with such a condition.

yeah its a posh type of place and minimum rooms is 10. If both sets of parents and all the bridesmaids/groomsmen stay that's 8 rooms. Plus I know for sure a close friend who would stay, so 9. The location is handy for most other people which is why I'm concerned. Everyone has SOMEONE they could crash with (if a taxi fare worked out cheaper than a room), but also most of the guests are up for the craic and would probably stay up till the wee hours and not want to leave, so maybe they'd be inclined to book a room.

It's a general condition and I can try and haggle it down so we dont end up stuck. We're both the eldest in our families and our siblings are all students so we would probably have sorted their rooms anyway. If it wasn't in the equation I wouldn't be haggling much else, other than corkage vs buying their wine and maybe little extras like canapes/prosecco for the drinks reception. I know what you mean about it seeming like we're getting a bargain when maybe it isnt!
