What is the best television to buy to watch sporting events? One with 50HZ or 100HZ.

100Hz.
Plasma is better than either for sports.

If you are stuck on LCD/LED, when you are checking them out in the shops walk to the side and watch from a 45 degree angle. Some sets really struggle to pass that test.
