How long do you have to charge a new phone for?

I haven't gotten a new phone in a long time. Back in the day you had to charge the phone for 12 hours before you could even look at it sideways or else you were doomed with a phone that would forever have no battery. Is this still the case? I'm looking at my new toy and I really want to play with it.

Not really the case, different type battery's that don't have that 'memory effect' on them.
