Do Superhero films have their own genre?

I was chatting to my friends tonight about the recent Avengers film and we went on to discuss how superhero films are categorised nowadays.

I'm not huge fan generally but I believe that they have replaced the western as one of the main draws in Hollywood and they really are a genre onto themselves given the sheer volume of films that have been produced since the 1980s.

Some of my friends think they are in the action adventure or Sci-Fi genre.

That's a bit like asking "What's the number for 911?"

They are in the same way that some westerns are adventures/comedies/dramas/revenge movies/war films even sci-fi in some cases.

Yes? I wouldnt call The Dark Knight a crime drama and Amazing Spiderman a teen angst film, even though they have those elements, so yeah, superhero films are their own genre.
