Replacing Shaving Socket with Light?

    Hi guys,

    This is my first post in this section. I'm an amateur DIY'er and would regard myself reasonable with most things - as for electrical, my knowledge would be poor but I've changed light fittings and light switches in the past. I basically copy what I see (while all fuses etc are off of course!) and/or follow the instructions. Thankfully, no problems to date (other than a shock of sorts while changing the door bell system!!!).

    My question however, is as follows:
    Can I replace a shaving socket in my bathroom with a light fitting? I'm not even sure if such a thing exists but is there a light fitting available, that slots into the rectangular box that houses the shaving socket? I was thinking of simply removing the shaving socket (as I don't use it and think it's rather 80's looking!), making safe the wires, removing the plastic box that's sunk into the plasterboard and fill up that space - i.e. it's all forgotten about.

    However, I wondered if it's possible to replace it with a light? It's not essential that I have a light I might add but thought that some sort of light, that's flush with the wall and fits the box that currently houses the rectangular shaving socket, might look nice.

    Does such a thing exist? If so, where might I get one and lastly, would it be as straightforward as fitting a new light fitting?

    Hi yes it would be fine just check is the supply coming from a socket or off the lighting supply.

    Make sure to use good connectors as would expect the cable to be too short so an extension will be needed

    there's another thread here about bathroom lights, check the links for some rules.
    i.e. you cant have an uncovered light bulb, should be IP44 rated etc.

    If it's over the sink why not buy a mirror with light built in it would cover the hole left from the existing light.

    Shouldn't be a problem but you should make sure as to how the shaver socket is wired before swapping it out for a light fitting I'd assume it's off the bathroom lighting cicuit.

    Without saying it you'll need a light with a pull chord switch unless they've wired it off the feed at the switch , you could use it as a switch wire instead of a feed to the socket.

    posting photos usually gets a more accurate answer.
