Very disappointing end. We have no proven CF that can score goals in the premiership. Looks like the boards are just happy with scraping 4th again.

Well that both sucked and blowed.

I better not complain, everything will be fine, our squad is the best it could be. Suggest another player!? You must be joking, that's ****in treason around here.

No no, give Giroud a chance, don't complain, you can't do that. If you see tactical problems in the team you're just not giving them a chance apparently.

    Same s**t, different season.

I disagree that we need another striker and would be curious as to who exactly people wanted in this position.

Surprised and disappointed that we didn't replace song though or bring in any new bodies in midfield.

Im not surprised we didn't replace him, with everyone fit (oh look a flying pig!) the starting midfield is going to be a headache for Wenger, we are very crowded there. Someone who could cover LB and RB wouldve been handy and i think once podolski and giroud and even cazorla start finding the back of the net and getting into the swing of things we should be fine.

I will give him a chance by all means but the thing is, if he fails there is no one else to turn to. Remember Chamahk? He started off OK, then RVP came back and he turned into a little girl. RVP went on to have the best form of his career. Massive massive pressure on Giroud, we are basically asking him to score 30 goals for us this season.

Goals I think will be hard to come by. We struggled against two ordinary enough teams to score, do you think its going to easier against the like of Man United, Man City and Chelsea et al? The team does look a little more solid now but we created hardly anything so far in 180 minutes of football. I know we have new players settling in but the points lost in the first few games here could prove crucial. Need I remind people that we just managed 3rd last year by one point?

Wenger/the board are taking a huge risk here even more so than last year. We are two/three bad results away from a real crisis and we have no transfer window or RVP to bail us out this time out. I hope to god the cards fall in our favour but in football nothing is guaranteed.

This could be Wenger's last stand or it could be the beginning of new stronger Arsenal. I want the latter but fear the former.

I think we'll be fine once the team is settled in. I've said this before but the new players had virtually no playing time to gel before the season started. I'm expecting a much improved attacking performance from the team tommorrow.

One good thing about the lack of transfer activity yesterday is that the team is not going to be disrupted by new additions.

We are not expecting 30 goals from Giroud but 30+ from Giroud and Podolski combined with a pretty good supporting cast in midfield providing goals too.

The season starts tomorrow and I'm really looking forward to it.

I find it hard to agree with those saying we didn't need another striker. What exactly are our ambitions this season? Wenger thinks we can win the league. We have no chance. 2 strikers, backed up by Chamakh is not going to score the goals. I think this window has consolidad the ambition of the club - make a profit; promote youth and expect them to fill the gaps, and gamble massively on the fitness of players.

It's another opportunity lost as far as I can see, no money was spent improving the team. Are we stronger now than we were on July 1st? We've lost 2 of our most important players and allowed Walcott to effectively become a free agent. It's hard to see us getting the luck we got last season as all our rivals crumbled and we were handed 3rd. We have an unbalanced squad and I think we're going to struggle.

People on here giving giroud a hard time lets give him a chance he might be exactly what we need it he might flop one thing is for sure no one can tell after two games

We just have to trust wenger he had the money and didn't spend it which means he couldn't get who he wanted or they just weren't available

Looking at our squad it's not as bad as I first thought IF we can keep everyone from getting a long term injury

    Scez
    Sanga kos verm Gibbs
    Arteta wilshere
    Walcott. Santi. Podolski
    Giroud

    Then. 2nd 11

    Fab
    Jenk. Mert Johan. Santos
    Diaby. Coq
    Ox. Ramsey Gervinho
    Chamak

That's not too bad and we even have decent players on the 3rd team that could do a job

So overall a little disappointed but it's not as bad as first thought we might be when a little stronger than last season

Edit: I forgot rosicky and Arshavin

Phone died when I was out last night, so I missed all the transfer deadline rubbish! Did we really not sign anybody yesterday? Really??? Profit was made again, what an absolute shambles!!!

For those complaining about lack of another striker:

    1. Who would you have gotten that would be happy to sit on the bench behind Giroud? Actual names please, no cop out answers.

    2. Would they then not also need time to settle into a new team/system?

    3. Are you aware that Podolski and Giroud scored 40 goals between them last season? Very few players that we could have gotten would match up to that.

Another striker for backup would have been nice but it isnt the end of the world. Giroud, Podolski, Chamakh, Walcott and Gervinho can all play up top aswell as several players from the youth team. Thats five fairly different options up front. Considering we only play one striker it's not really realistic to expect more than that.

I'd have much rathered a defensive minded midfielder or someone to cover RB and LB before another striker.

Definitely disapointed we didn't get full back cover but tbh this is what I was expecting. Will be interesting to see whats happening with Theo, he may get more chances up top this year.

Anyone else think Tottenhams dealings have been reallyyyyyyyy over rated by the media ? :pac:

On the defensive midfielder argument I wanted one too and really wanted M'Vila. If he had been brought in though, it would have been the end of Coquelin as an Arsenal player. He's going to be a great player and I'm really hoping he'll get the chance to prove it this year.

And as for a back-up striker - what about Owen - he was always delighted to sit on the bench for Man Utd ?

Tottenham's dealings are overrated because they came so late in the day. It looked like they were heading into the new season after losing their best player and not strengthening. Then along come a couple of signings at the last minute, things look better.

They lost Modric and Van der Vaart, brought in Lloris, Dempsey, Dembele. In reality they'll be losing Friedel soon enough so you can look at it as a straight swap. They've signed replacements for 3 players, not strengthened the squad. Apart from Lloris, they've probably signed weaker players than they've let go.

Also the media have a hard on for Levy and how great a negotiator he is. He spends all summer long faffing around with Modric, eventually selling him in the last week of the window and forcing spurs into deadline day deals. Also he gets some partnership out of them which will utimately mean fúck all, yet some people are calling the man a Genius?

Arsenal did better business than spurs this summer, a lot better.

Yeh was thinking about Owen myself could possibly still do a job when needed be nice to have on the bench anyway, but I dont think that would sit to well with a lot of supporters.

I am actually happy enough with our transfer dealings. If there were any positions that I would liked to have seen strengthened they would probably reserve goal keeper and ideally a player that could play left and right back.

I'm not all that surprised that we didn't sign another midfielder yesterday. As usual we seem to have the problem where we need a really good back up player in case of injury. However, most players who are any good would not be happy to come to any team to just sit on the bench.

At the moment we have Diaby, Cazorla, Arteta, Rosicky, Ramsey, Coquelin, Frimpong and Wilshere who all play in the centre of midfield. Most players looking at that would be cautious about a move to Arsenal with that many players potentially ahead of you.

If we do get Wilshere back this season, it is more than likely that any possible replacement would be dropped to the bench by this time next year. That would give any player a year to make a major impact to keep their place and given that it takes most players coming from abroad a few months to settle in to the EPL, I would say most players wouldn't bother risking their career by coming to Arsenal to sit on the bench and not play for at least a year.

I was talking to French co-worker earlier in the summer about M'Vila. Like most here he reckoned that he is a very good player but said that he could be very troublesome. He told me that M'Vila was arrested just before the Euros for an assualt on a 17 year old and there have been other things in the past apparently. Now one incident is no indication of form, but the last thing I would want to see is a Joey Barton type character in an Arsenal shirt.

    Is Szczesny back?

    Jenkinson - Koscielny - Vermaelen - Gibbs
    Arteta
    Cazorla --- Ramsey/Diaby
    - Chamberlain
    Podolski
    Giroud

Gervinho was poor last week so drops to the bench. If Chamberlain is fit, he's in. If not, Walcott is. Gervinho on for Podolski in the second half. He seems to play better on the left. If Carroll was still there, I'd play Mertesacker but since he is gone Koscielny is back in. Barring injuries, the only question mark for me again this week is Ramsey or Diaby.

Over the years Diaby has played well against Liverpool. He seems to like playing against them. I think Szcz is back too. I think that team will start.

I think tomorrow could be the game Carzola is really gonna kick into life. He's looked so busy and with Liverpool not playing 10-0-1 like Stoke and Sunderland have, I think he could be the key.

I knew I wouldn't miss much by being out last night as I didn't expect much happening. I actually though we would sign one player, a midfielder, and that would be that.
Now I only have one question --
Who will replace Cazorla in midfield if he gets injured, who have we that can create goals if he's out?

Went out of my way to find an internet cafe today to see who we'd signed. Can't believe it turned out to be no-one. Theo has us over a barrel totally now too, we're going to lose him on a free next summer.

The pressure on Giroud/Podolski is massive now. We're pretty much demanding they chip in with 12-15 goals apiece, which I can't see happening.

Once again Wenger has presided over a poor summer. Not close to the train wreck of last year, but the optimism I had after the early signings of Giroud and Podolski that's things were going to be different this year has completely disappeared as, once again, our main goal was making profit. Pathetic.

It's not, its the exact same. i don't think there was ever a hope of another forward being signed & especially since walcott is staying, that would've probably seen one bought you'd think

Our double winning captain of 1971 is asking questions of our transfer policy. Very interesting photo too.

Thought we would sign another midfielder but its not the end of the world. Another defender would have been no harm either. Squad is still in better shape than this time last year anyway. We'll finish in the top 4 withot any hassle, maybe improve on last year. As for winning the league, not going to happen, but I think we have a better chance this year than last year. Besides, United won it two years ago and came second last season without any midfield, so stranger things have happened :pac:

I'm glad Chamakh stayed, there I said it.

Whether we win or lose tomorrow Cazorla will look like he's going to be great this season. I wouldn't be surprised by a lot of goals tomorrow but that doesn't change what I think is an underlying problem with getting through a deep defence that we'll be facing loads this season.

Just think Ramsey is not the same since his injury and as for Oxo he is being used on the wing. Maybe Arshavin could be used in the middle like he is with Russia.

Wow, nobody. I was expecting some under 17s Icelandic central midfielder or something...
