I think the levels of pessimism surrounding our proposed transfer activity as the deadline approaches is a tad excessive.

Of course it is frustrating that there seems to be no relatively big name coming in, but to be fair its not like the squad is in dire straights as it was on this day last year.

With the exception of the full back positions perhaps, we are pretty strong all round. That being said, when inevitable injuries kick in, the strength will really be tested.

I think the fact that potential activity has been left late again is down to the difficulty in offloading players from the wage bill, rather than the club arse-ing around. There is no question that had we been able to offload Bendtner, Chamahk, Park, Squillaci, etc. a month ago, all our deals would be done and dusted by now.

We're short a striker, short a DM, dodgy full backs.

Think we def need a winger/striker for rotation
We could argue bout the other two saying were grand If everyone stays fit, but we no that won't happen

I'm quite happy with the squad, as it is.
But i am worried about cover.
So in that sense if Wenger gets a loaner and a permanent, i'd be very happy.

I agree with RVP11, the squad's not bad, I'd love a big signing but i also want to see how Frimps and Coq come along and would love if some of the young players get some time this season.

    Essien? just no. Just NO.

    on loan though, maybe.

Said it earlier in the thread, can't see us signing anyone that is a genuine starter when everyone is fit (hope I'm wrong)
But a couple of decent squad players would be lovely now

There's so many clubs interested in him, none of them want anything other than a loan.
All the **** him and his oul lad talk about every year, about he is the best forward in the world, should be starting every game for Arsenal, every single top team wanting him....:D

Notice in that interview Wenger said "we have enough resources & quality now, and if not maybe in December"
He loves beating around the bush.

It's not looking good for us getting anything of value before 10pm

I say it every year, but I really hate transfer deadline day.

Signing Essien is just complete nonsense.

    What happened to 'super quality'?

Once again, it appears we haven't got our sh1t sorted.

This is just bad management and business, to be quite frank.

But only if it happens would i think it's bad business. Might just be talk.

Not a word on Sky or BBC regarding any Arsenal signings.
Aw well, as long as we make a profit ...

Dempsey to Villa now looking likely.

    .
To be fair that's normal, even when we are signing someone.

It just came up on Sky Sports News that he only wants to join Liverpool. Van Der Vaart off to Hamburg as well surprised at that! Berbatov is on the missing list Alex Ferguson said he doesnt know were he is that it wouldnt surprise him if he was at Spurs

    From the BBC
We've been given word that, as things stand, it is unlikely there will be any major arrivals at Arsenal before the transfer deadline.

Reports linking them with a move for Newcastle midfielder Chieck Tiote are wide of the mark, while there have been informal conversations with Chelsea about midfielder Michael Essien - the Blues are open to him leaving on loan - but this move will not happen unless Arsene Wenger changes his mind on a player he has not been tracking.

Have to say Il be disappointed if we dont get anyone

Some guy called buzz posted this. I reckon it's bull though --

i work for arsenal f.c.. Theres lots going off behind the scenes but a lot of activity is trying to sell the fringe players...
wenger is interested in signing a couple of the following players but only after the have sold first.

mvilla -wenger only put off by asking price
kaka - loan - wages sticking point
    essien - loan
tiote - newcastle very reluctant to sell
dempsey - high chance this could happen

there is no truth in schwienstiger or fabregas rumors

    buzz

Anyone remember this? I honestly don't see why people are so anti-Essien anyway. He'd be worth having for a year if only for what the likes of Coq and Frimpong could learn from him on the training ground, he's done his cruciate but he's only 30 and with a bunch of busy midfielders around him and quick centre halfs like Kos and Verm I don't see why he couldn't offer us decent defensive cover and experience in the middle.

Essien is sadly, over the hill. Coquelin is a better option at this stage imo.

I cant see us not signing somebody. If only they could see at the club were just 3 players short of seriously challenging on all fronts this season, I think Wenger knows this but its trying to get rid of the likes of Bendtner, Arshavin, Chamakh, Squillachi etc first before we can bring players in. Full back, combatitive midfielder and striker are what is needed!

    This is getting depressing.

Coquelin has great potential, I just think for the sake of a loan deal, there's valuable experience to be gained from having someone like Essien around. If you recall for what was arguably our biggest game of the season, Spurs at home, Wenger started Benayoun and Rosicky, and both put in vital performances. I wonder if Coq or Gerv and Ramsey had started would the result have been the same.

There's a lot to be said for having a bit of experience around, especially when backs are to the wall in big games.

Wenger must think there is no one worth value to improve the squad

you make have a good point 2ndcoming.

I can see us making no permanent signings, I was hopeful we'd get Biglia perhaps. I can understand the need to clear the deadwood is rather pressing as the wages must be costing near 10m a year.
